SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, It is appropriate to remember the many sacrifices
3and contributions to the cause of freedom made by the
4outstanding men and women who served in the U.S. Armed Forces;
5and
 
6    WHEREAS, Lt. Col. John Stein was born in Des Moines, Iowa
7to Jay and Hazel (Fick) Stein on July 8, 1963; he married
8Barbara Nelson in Macomb on July 9, 1983; he grew up in the
9Macomb area and moved away in 1983; he graduated from the
10Rochester Institute of Technology in 1985; he received his
11master's degree from the University of Maryland; and
 
12    WHEREAS, Lt. Col. Stein was commissioned into the U.S.
13Army and transferred to the U.S. Air Force; during his
14military career, he flew 3,901 hours; he volunteered for the
15rescue mission he was flying when he was killed in Afghanistan
16on March 23, 2003; and
 
17    WHEREAS, During his military career, Lt. Col. Stein
18received a Meritorious Service Medal, an Air Medal, an Aerial
19Achievement Medal, an Air Force Commendation Medal, an Army
20Commendation Medal, and an Army Achievement Medal; and
 
21    WHEREAS, Lt. Col. Stein was preceded in death by his

1grandparents; and
 
2    WHEREAS, Lt. Col. Stein's passing has been deeply felt by
3many, especially his wife, Barbara Nelson Stein; his father,
4Jay W. Stein; his mother, Hazel Henry; his two sons, Doug and
5Tim Stein; his daughter, Erin Stein Jones; his sisters, Holly
6Stein, Navida (James McLaughlin) Stein, and April Stein; his
7six nieces; and his two nephews; therefore, be it
 
8    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL
9ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, THE HOUSE OF
10REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING HEREIN, that we designate the
11portion of Old Highway 136 from E. 950th St. to E. 750th St.
12between Macomb and Colchester as the "Lt. Col. John Stein
13Memorial Highway"; and be it further
 
14    RESOLVED, That the Illinois Department of Transportation
15is requested to erect at suitable locations, consistent with
16State and federal regulations, appropriate plaques or signs
17giving notice of the name of "Lt. Col. John Stein Memorial
18Highway"; and be it further
 
19    RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be
20presented to the Secretary of Transportation and the family of
21Lt. Col. Stein.
