2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of |
3 | | Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Barbara |
4 | | Jean Tatum, who passed away on June 8, 2022; and
|
5 | | WHEREAS, Barbara Tatum was born to Willie L. Lee Sr. and |
6 | | Vinney Gillespie Lee in Meridian, Mississippi on November 16, |
7 | | 1938; she attended Dunbar High School, Wilson Junior College, |
8 | | Roosevelt University, and Trinity College and Seminary; she |
9 | | married Reverend B.J. Tatum Sr.; and
|
10 | | WHEREAS, Barbara Tatum worked as a legal secretary in the |
11 | | federal government and an administrative secretary to the |
12 | | former Mayor of Urbana; she served as the director of |
13 | | Christian Education and the administrative secretary at Canaan |
14 | | Baptist Church; she also wrote the weekly religious column |
15 | | Reflections in The Woodlawn Observer, a community-based |
16 | | newspaper; and
|
17 | | WHEREAS, Barbara Tatum held a number of responsibilities |
18 | | in her role as director of Christian Education at Canaan |
19 | | Baptist Church; alongside her husband, she taught classes and |
20 | | seminars on relationships; she taught teacher training |
21 | | classes, training classes on discipleship follow-up for |
22 | | P.A.C.E. (People Available to Encourage), child evangelism, a |

1 | | Sunday school teacher's class on methods and relevancy, a |
2 | | discipleship class on interpersonal relationships, and a |
3 | | Sunday morning women's discipleship class; she conducted |
4 | | seminars and workshops for women on spiritual growth and faith |
5 | | education, and she addressed women's groups in various cities |
6 | | of the United States as well as in Athens and Crete, Greece; |
7 | | she and her husband were facilitators at marriage retreats at |
8 | | various churches throughout the United States, and they also |
9 | | attended a mission trip to Beijing and Hong Kong; she was also |
10 | | director of the Amazing Women Ministry, God's Gems Mosaic, and |
11 | | the Children's Ministry; and
|
12 | | WHEREAS, Barbara Tatum served as president of the Women's |
13 | | Department of the Progressive Baptist District Association of |
14 | | Chicago and Vicinity; she served on the board of directors of |
15 | | the American Cancer Society, the Canaan Development |
16 | | Foundation, and the Canaan Credit Union; and
|
17 | | WHEREAS, Barbara Tatum was preceded in death by her |
18 | | parents; her daughter, Pamela Jean Tatum; and her siblings, |
19 | | Willie L. Lee Jr., Rosie Mae Johnson, Nathan Henry Lee, John |
20 | | Arnold Lee, and Robert Earl Lee; and
|
21 | | WHEREAS, Barbara Tatum is survived by her husband; her |
22 | | daughters, Yolanda Tatum-Brown and Stephanie Lynne Tatum; her |
23 | | son, Bryant Jay (Jennifer) Tatum; her grandsons, Everett, |

1 | | Supreme, Bryson, Jordan, and Ishine; her sister, Beverly |
2 | | Moore; and a host of other relatives and special friends; |

4 | | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE |
5 | | HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that |
6 | | we mourn the passing of
Barbara Jean Tatum and extend our |
7 | | sincere
condolences to her family, friends, and all who knew |
8 | | and loved
her; and be it further
