2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of | ||||||
3 | Representatives wish to congratulate the Kankakee High School | ||||||
4 | boys track and field team, the Chief Kays, on the occasion of | ||||||
5 | winning the IHSA Class 2A State Finals; and
| ||||||
6 | WHEREAS, The Chief Kays scored 62 points, earning 28 more | ||||||
7 | than co-runners-up, Mount Vernon and Mount Zion; the team | ||||||
8 | scored points in nine events, with seven athletes combining to | ||||||
9 | win 19 individual and relay medals; and
| ||||||
10 | WHEREAS, The Chief Kays are comprised of many talented | ||||||
11 | kids; sophomore Jayon Morrow won four medals, running on the | ||||||
12 | 4x100-meter, 4x200-meter, and 4x400-meter relays and taking | ||||||
13 | second place in the 200-meter dash with a time of 21.97 | ||||||
14 | seconds; junior Naz Hill earned three medals in the | ||||||
15 | 4x100-meter and 4x200-meter relays and the long jump with a | ||||||
16 | distance of 6.74 meters; junior Tyrice Bender earned medals | ||||||
17 | for running on all three relays; seniors Aarion Brown, running | ||||||
18 | on the 4x200-meter and 4x400-meter relays, Jalen Townsend, | ||||||
19 | running on the 4x400-meter relay and placing eighth in the | ||||||
20 | 300-meter hurdles with a time of 40.96 seconds, and Nickolos | ||||||
21 | Hall, placing ninth in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of | ||||||
22 | 15.43 seconds, all made huge contributions to the team's win; | ||||||

1 | WHEREAS, The Chief Kays were also joined in celebrations | ||||||
2 | with the Kankakee High School girls track and field team, the | ||||||
3 | Lady Kays, as they too won the IHSA Class 2A State Finals, | ||||||
4 | marking the first team state championships ever won by | ||||||
5 | Kankakee High School; and
| ||||||
6 | WHEREAS, The Chief Kays and the Lady Kays are not only | ||||||
7 | special but also inspirational; the teams were sadly hit with | ||||||
8 | the loss of two assistant coaches, Jemiya Bates and Chwan | ||||||
9 | Wilson, with Coach Bates dying of brain cancer and Coach | ||||||
10 | Wilson passing due to COVID-19 complications; these teams took | ||||||
11 | their late coaches' passion and love to heart, making both | ||||||
12 | proud by working together to overcome their competition; and
| ||||||
13 | WHEREAS, The Chief Kays were led by Head Coach Marques | ||||||
14 | Lowe, Assistant Coaches Erica Baptist, the late Jemiya Bates, | ||||||
15 | Sarah Ganster, Rich Olmstead, and the late Chwan Wilson, and | ||||||
16 | Meet Director Kurt Weigt; and
| ||||||
17 | WHEREAS, The Chief Kays' achievement will be celebrated | ||||||
18 | for years to come, and the memories made by the team will be | ||||||
19 | cherished forever; therefore, be it
| ||||||
20 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE | ||||||
21 | HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that |
