| ||||||
2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of | ||||||
3 | Representatives wish to congratulate the Village of Roselle as | ||||||
4 | it commemorates its 100th anniversary this fall on October 7, | ||||||
5 | 2022; and
| ||||||
6 | WHEREAS, The Village of Roselle is a suburb of Chicago, | ||||||
7 | located in both DuPage and Cook Counties; first incorporated | ||||||
8 | in 1922 as a bedroom community, its train stop attracted | ||||||
9 | residents commuting to work in Chicago and nearby suburbs; and
| ||||||
10 | WHEREAS, The land surrounding the current Village of | ||||||
11 | Roselle began to be settled in the early 1830s, as settlers | ||||||
12 | moved in next to the native Potawatomi people; and | ||||||
13 | WHEREAS, Silas, Harvey, and Lyman Meacham settled the area | ||||||
14 | now known as Bloomingdale Township as the government had been | ||||||
15 | offering land in the area for approximately $1.25/acre; and | ||||||
16 | WHEREAS, In 1837, Deacon Elijah Hough and his wife settled | ||||||
17 | in the Bloomingdale area with his sons, Oramel and Rosell, and | ||||||
18 | his daughter, Cornelia; and | ||||||
19 | WHEREAS, In 1868, at the age of 48, Rosell Hough returned | ||||||
20 | from a career as an alderman and a businessman in Chicago and |

1 | saw that the area had become a farming center for corn and | ||||||
2 | flax; he opened the Illinois Linen Company on the northwest | ||||||
3 | corner of what is now Roselle Road and Irving Park Road; and | ||||||
4 | WHEREAS, Rosell Hough was also the president of the | ||||||
5 | Chicago and Pacific Railroad Company and was rumored to have | ||||||
6 | spent some money to alter a land survey to show that a railroad | ||||||
7 | line should run through Roselle, Itasca, and Wood Dale instead | ||||||
8 | of Addison and Bloomingdale; and | ||||||
9 | WHEREAS, It is alleged that the train schedule misprinted | ||||||
10 | the name of the town on the rail line as "Roselle" instead of | ||||||
11 | "Rosell", giving Roselle its current name; and | ||||||
12 | WHEREAS, Bloomingdale, including the northern Roselle | ||||||
13 | section, held its first town meeting in 1850, although it did | ||||||
14 | not incorporate until 1889; and | ||||||
15 | WHEREAS, The issue of water would eventually draw Roselle | ||||||
16 | and Bloomingdale apart, as Roselle residents were determined | ||||||
17 | to have their own water and sewer service, but Bloomingdale | ||||||
18 | residents did not want to pay the higher taxes needed to build | ||||||
19 | such as system; and | ||||||
20 | WHEREAS, At this time, the citizens of Roselle of | ||||||
21 | Bloomingdale realized they were paying a large portion of |

1 | Bloomingdale's taxes, a product of increasing population and | ||||||
2 | business growth; and | ||||||
3 | WHEREAS, Roselle residents decided it was time to become | ||||||
4 | independent of Bloomingdale, and in the summer of 1922, the | ||||||
5 | Roselle community held its last joint meeting with the Village | ||||||
6 | of Bloomingdale; and

7 | WHEREAS, Roselle incorporated and received its charter on | ||||||
8 | October 7, 1922 with Herman Thiemann elected as the village's | ||||||
9 | first president; Reuben Baker, Herman Bartles, Henry | ||||||
10 | Haberkamp, William Thurnau, Al Roloff, and Ed Zarndt were the | ||||||
11 | first board members, and Earl Crandall was the first village | ||||||
12 | clerk; and
| ||||||
13 | WHEREAS, Roselle has a fascinating history to commemorate | ||||||
14 | as it reaches its 100th anniversary this fall and is | ||||||
15 | deservedly marking the milestone with celebrations and events | ||||||
16 | throughout the 2022 year; therefore, be it
| ||||||
17 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE | ||||||
18 | HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that | ||||||
19 | we congratulate the Village of Roselle on the centennial | ||||||
20 | anniversary of its founding, and we wish this community peace | ||||||
21 | and success in generations to come; and be it further

2 | presented to the Village of Roselle as a symbol of our respect | ||||||
3 | and esteem.
