HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives wish to congratulate Christine J. Sobek,
4Ed.D., on the occasion of her 20th year serving as president of
5Waubonsee Community College; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Dr. Sobek became the fourth president of
7Waubonsee Community College on July 1, 2001; in this role, she
8is responsible for the overall leadership of the college,
9which serves more than 14,000 students each year, employs
10approximately 1,100 employees, and provides educational
11programs and services at a network of four permanent campuses
12located across the 624-square-mile college district and
13through extensive virtual and online classes and services; and
 
14    WHEREAS, Dr. Sobek has more than 40 years of community
15college administrative experience; she served in several
16administrative roles at Waubonsee Community College prior to
17her appointment as president, including provost from 2000 to
182001, executive vice president for Educational Affairs from
191997 to 2000, assistant vice president for Instruction from
201993 to 1997, assistant vice president for Student Development
21from 1991 to 1993, and dean of Student Development from 1989 to
221991; and

1    WHEREAS, Prior to joining Waubonsee Community College in
21989, Dr. Sobek served at the College of Lake County in
3Grayslake for 11 years, where her leadership roles included
4executive assistant to the president, director of Personnel,
5Affirmative Action officer, and director of Placement; she
6also served as an adjunct faculty member at Trinity College in
7Deerfield from 1985 to 1989 and as an assistant director of
8Student Affairs at Lyman Briggs Residential College at
9Michigan State University; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Dr. Sobek has participated in a number of local
11organizations, including serving as a member of the Invest
12Aurora Board of Directors, the Marmion Academy Board of
13Trustees, the Mutual Ground Advisory Board, the Conservation
14Foundation Leadership Board and as trustee emeritus, and
15serving as vice chair of the City of Aurora Education
16Commission and the Rush-Copley Medical Center Board of
17Directors; and
 
18    WHEREAS, Dr. Sobek belongs to several regional, state, and
19national organizations; on the regional and state level, she
20is a member of the Illinois Facilities Fund, where she serves
21on the Chicago Area Local Market Advisory Committee, and the
22Illinois Council of Community College Presidents; on the
23national level, she belongs to the Association of American
24Colleges and Universities Presidents' Trust, the Alliance for

1Innovation and Transformation as an executive committee member
2and a secretary/treasurer, and the American Association of
3Community Colleges Advocacy Advisory Group; and
 
4    WHEREAS, Dr. Sobek has received a number of accolades
5during her career, including Crain's Chicago Business
6Chicago's Notable Women in Education, the Quad County Urban
7League's Woman of Power Award, Phi Theta Kappa International
8Honor Society's Shirley B. Gordon Award of Distinction, and
9the Illinois Community College Trustees Association Advocacy
10Award; and
 
11    WHEREAS, Dr. Sobek earned her doctoral degree from
12Northern Illinois University, her master's degree from
13Michigan State University, and her bachelor's degree from
14Purdue University; she is a member of Phi Beta Kappa and an
15honorary member of the Phi Theta Kappa International Honor
16Society; therefore, be it
 
17    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
18HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
19we congratulate Christine J. Sobek, Ed.D., on serving as
20president of Waubonsee Community College for the past 20
21years, thank her for her commitment to the community and the
22State of Illinois, and wish her continued success; and be it
