2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of | ||||||
3 | Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Captain | ||||||
4 | Garrett E. Ramos of the Sterling Fire Department, who was | ||||||
5 | killed in the line of duty on December 4, 2021; and
| ||||||
6 | WHEREAS, Capt. Ramos was born to Edward and Jeannie | ||||||
7 | (McKee) Ramos in Sterling on October 27, 1983; in his youth, he | ||||||
8 | enjoyed spending time with his family and playing team sports, | ||||||
9 | excelling at basketball; his character was formed in these | ||||||
10 | early years through his faith, his family, and lessons learned | ||||||
11 | from team sports; he attended St. Mary's Grade School; he | ||||||
12 | graduated from Sterling High School in 2002; he attended the | ||||||
13 | South Carolina Fire Academy following his graduation from | ||||||
14 | Illinois State University; he married Brittney C. Berger in | ||||||
15 | Benton Harbor, Michigan on July 23, 2016, and they travelled | ||||||
16 | the world together before the birth of their two daughters; | ||||||
17 | and
| ||||||
18 | WHEREAS, Following in his father's footsteps, Capt. Ramos | ||||||
19 | began his firefighting career at the North Charleston Fire | ||||||
20 | Department in Charleston, South Carolina; he returned to his | ||||||
21 | hometown, joining the Sterling Fire Department in October | ||||||
22 | 2012; he served as acting captain for a year prior to his death | ||||||
23 | and was posthumously promoted to the rank of captain by the |

1 | City of Sterling; and
| ||||||
2 | WHEREAS, Capt. Ramos served as union president of Local | ||||||
3 | 2301 of the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF); | ||||||
4 | and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, Capt. Ramos was a devoted and loving husband and | ||||||
6 | father; he was a firefighter of the highest caliber; he was | ||||||
7 | known for his positive attitude, his contagious smile, his | ||||||
8 | infectious laugh, and his heart of gold; he will be missed by | ||||||
9 | his family, his friends, his community, and his State; and
| ||||||
10 | WHEREAS, Capt. Ramos was preceded in death by his | ||||||
11 | grandparents, Gordon and Ruth (Lendman) McKee and Jose and | ||||||
12 | Delia (Vargas) Ramos; his aunt, Eileen Marrs; and his cousins, | ||||||
13 | Amanda Tope and Kevin Fuglestad; and
| ||||||
14 | WHEREAS, Capt. Ramos is survived by his wife, Brittney; | ||||||
15 | his daughters, Ruthie and Kepa; his parents, Ed and Jeannie | ||||||
16 | Ramos; his sister, Jennifer (Aaron) Brannon; his nieces, | ||||||
17 | Joslyn and Isla; his nephew, Drake; his mother-in-law, Sue | ||||||
18 | (Liz) Roberts; his father-in-law, Rick (Linda) Berger; his | ||||||
19 | several aunts, uncles, and cousins; and countless others; | ||||||
20 | therefore, be it

1 | HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that | ||||||
2 | we mourn the passing of Captain Garrett E. Ramos and extend our | ||||||
3 | sincere condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew | ||||||
4 | and loved him; and be it further

5 | RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be | ||||||
