2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of | ||||||
3 | Representatives wish to congratulate the Chicago High School | ||||||
4 | for Agriculture Sciences on the occasion of the 175th | ||||||
5 | anniversary of the founding of its farm, located at 111th | ||||||
6 | Street and Pulaski Road; and
| ||||||
7 | WHEREAS, The farm, consisting of 129 acres, was purchased | ||||||
8 | by the Chicago Board of Education for $79 on December 11, 1846, | ||||||
9 | as they forecasted the extension of the city limits to distant | ||||||
10 | points where schools would be needed; the land was leased for | ||||||
11 | farming, and although the technology used has changed over the | ||||||
12 | years, some things do not; the farm, now just under 79 acres | ||||||
13 | after sections were sold, still grows corn, still has a market | ||||||
14 | garden, and still hosts a farm stand; and | ||||||
15 | WHEREAS, The land has not fundamentally changed since | ||||||
16 | 1846, though the community surrounding it certainly has; Mount | ||||||
17 | Greenwood was first populated in 1830 but did not experience a | ||||||
18 | notable influx of settlers until the 1893 World's Columbian | ||||||
19 | Exposition; and

20 | WHEREAS, In the early 1980s, the Chicago Board of | ||||||
21 | Education was considering selling the land to real estate | ||||||
22 | developers; the Citizen's Committee to Save Chicago's Last |

1 | Farm was formed, and in response, the board announced a new | ||||||
2 | plan in 1983; and
| ||||||
3 | WHEREAS, Based on a first of its kind successful | ||||||
4 | agricultural sciences high school in Philadelphia, the Chicago | ||||||
5 | High School for Agriculture Sciences was created in 1985 and | ||||||
6 | received more than 500 applications for approximately 150 | ||||||
7 | freshmen openings; the school was designed to offer college | ||||||
8 | preparatory and vocational education, with coursework devoted | ||||||
9 | to horticulture, food science, landscape design, and other | ||||||
10 | agriculture topics; and
| ||||||
11 | WHEREAS, To date, the Chicago High School for Agricultural | ||||||
12 | Sciences has an enrollment of approximately 800 students, and | ||||||
13 | to commemorate the historic 175th anniversary of the school's | ||||||
14 | farm, some of the students have created then-and-now photos | ||||||
15 | for display; therefore, be it

16 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE | ||||||
17 | HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that | ||||||
18 | we congratulate the Chicago High School for Agriculture | ||||||
19 | Sciences on the occasion of the 175th anniversary of the | ||||||
20 | founding of its farm; and be it further

21 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
22 | presented to the Chicago High School for Agricultural Sciences |
