2 | WHEREAS, The members of the House of Representatives wish | ||||||
3 | to congratulate Pete Nenni on his retirement as deputy | ||||||
4 | managing editor of The Daily Herald after more than 40 years of | ||||||
5 | dedicated work in the newspaper business; and
| ||||||
6 | WHEREAS, A native of Erie, Pennsylvania, Pete Nenni was | ||||||
7 | raised in Mount Prospect and attended Forest View High School | ||||||
8 | in Arlington Heights and Harper Community College in Palatine; | ||||||
9 | he graduated from Northern Illinois University with a | ||||||
10 | journalism major and a political science minor; and
| ||||||
11 | WHEREAS, Pete Nenni first worked with the Barrington Press | ||||||
12 | weekly newspaper group in Barrington; he joined the Daily | ||||||
13 | Herald as a reporter in 1980; he was the legal affairs reporter | ||||||
14 | for one year and the transportation reporter for five years; | ||||||
15 | he also covered local government and business; and
| ||||||
16 | WHEREAS, Pete Nenni served as the Lake County | ||||||
17 | editor/manager for more than ten years and as an assistant | ||||||
18 | city editor in the Cook County office for six years; and | ||||||
19 | WHEREAS, Pete Nenni was named deputy managing editor in | ||||||
20 | February of 2017 to oversee local coverage in the Cook, Lake, | ||||||
21 | Fox, and DuPage zones, which included organizing coverage |

1 | plans for the website and print editions and overseeing the | ||||||
2 | local reporting and editing staffs; he was also tasked with | ||||||
3 | many organizational and efficiency-based special projects; and
| ||||||
4 | WHEREAS, Pete Nenni reported on events such as the Chicago | ||||||
5 | Tylenol murders, the Laurie Dann shootings, the Arlington Park | ||||||
6 | Racetrack fire, the Browns Fried Chicken massacre, and a | ||||||
7 | presidential primary in New Hampshire where government | ||||||
8 | corruption was exposed, among others; he has interviewed | ||||||
9 | President Gerald Ford, former Governor James Thompson, and | ||||||
10 | Boston Red Sox Hall of Famer Joe Cronin; and
| ||||||
11 | WHEREAS, Pete Nenni was a member of the Daily Herald | ||||||
12 | Editorial Board and served on the Northern Illinois Newspaper | ||||||
13 | Association Board of Directors, including a term as president | ||||||
14 | in 2009; and
| ||||||
15 | WHEREAS, During his reporting career at the Daily Herald, | ||||||
16 | Pete Nenni won 12 state and regional writing awards, including | ||||||
17 | three Peter Lisagor Awards for Public Service reporting; those | ||||||
18 | awards stemmed from investigative projects focusing on faulty | ||||||
19 | equipment and poor maintenance of a suburban bus system and | ||||||
20 | mishaps and near mishaps on the runways and taxiways at O'Hare | ||||||
21 | International Airport; he was named the Daily Herald's Manager | ||||||
22 | of the Year in 2000; and

1 | WHEREAS, Counting Pete Nenni's work on newspapers in | ||||||
2 | junior high school, high school, college, and professionally, | ||||||
3 | his journalism career has spanned 46 years in the Northwest | ||||||
4 | suburbs; and | ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, Pete Nenni is respected by his peers and those | ||||||
6 | who worked for him; Daily Herald editor John Lampinen called | ||||||
7 | him "a devoted journalist, a caring mentor and leader, and a | ||||||
8 | tremendously good person"; therefore, be it
| ||||||
9 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE | ||||||
10 | HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that | ||||||
11 | we wish to congratulate Pete Nenni on his retirement as deputy | ||||||
12 | managing editor of The Daily Herald; and be it further
| ||||||
13 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
14 | presented to Pete Nenni as a symbol of our esteem and respect.
