2 | | WHEREAS, Juneteenth recognizes the
abolition of slavery in |
3 | | the United States and its territories
in 1865; and
|
4 | | WHEREAS, President Lincoln enacted the Emancipation |
5 | | Proclamation on January 1, 1863, freeing slaves throughout the |
6 | | south, but it was not until June 19, 1865, over two years later |
7 | | and over two months after General Robert E. Lee's surrender at |
8 | | Appomattox Court House, that slaves in Galveston, Texas |
9 | | received the news, making it the official end of slavery; and
|
10 | | WHEREAS, Juneteenth is a celebration of freedom from |
11 | | bondage and oppression; and
|
12 | | WHEREAS, The African-American Cultural & Genealogical |
13 | | Society, in Partnership with the City of Decatur Human
|
14 | | Relations Commission, will be holding its 27th Juneteenth |
15 | | celebration on Saturday, June 19, 2021 in downtown Decatur, |
16 | | which will include a wreath ceremony, Freedom Day Walk, and a |
17 | | variety of festivities, including giveaways, vendors, food, |
18 | | entertainment, fun, and culture; therefore, be it

19 | | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE |
20 | | HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that |
