2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of | ||||||
3 | Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Evelyn | ||||||
4 | Alexander of North Chicago, who passed away on May 14, 2021; | ||||||
5 | and
| ||||||
6 | WHEREAS, Evelyn Alexander was born on November 01, 1936; | ||||||
7 | and
| ||||||
8 | WHEREAS, Evelyn Alexander started volunteering in the | ||||||
9 | school cafeteria in 1958 and taught environmental health and | ||||||
10 | emergency preparedness; she also read to the students; some of | ||||||
11 | the children did not have books at home, so she would buy books | ||||||
12 | to read to them; she made herself available any place a | ||||||
13 | volunteer was needed; and
| ||||||
14 | WHEREAS, Evelyn Alexander served as president of the | ||||||
15 | parent-teacher organization while her four children were | ||||||
16 | enrolled; she was elected to the school board, eventually | ||||||
17 | retiring from the board; in recent years, after the State | ||||||
18 | Board of Education assumed oversight, she was appointed to | ||||||
19 | serve on the district's independent authority board; school | ||||||
20 | records indicate that she never missed a meeting the entire | ||||||
21 | time she was on the grade and high school boards; she is the | ||||||
22 | only resident to be appointed and/or elected to every school |

1 | board district in the history of the City of North Chicago; she | ||||||
2 | never lost a school board election while serving on Grade | ||||||
3 | School District 63 and Grade School District 64, High School | ||||||
4 | District 123, and North Chicago Community Unit District 187; | ||||||
5 | and | ||||||
6 | WHEREAS, Evelyn Alexander often volunteered as a chaperone | ||||||
7 | for field trips and sports events; she also volunteered with | ||||||
8 | the Foss Park District summer programs held on school | ||||||
9 | playgrounds; early in her career, she worked as a dispatcher | ||||||
10 | with the North Chicago Police Department and was soon promoted | ||||||
11 | to Health Commissioner and Emergency Services Disaster Agency | ||||||
12 | Coordinator; and
| ||||||
13 | WHEREAS, North Elementary school was renamed in her honor | ||||||
14 | as the Evelyn Alexander Elementary School; therefore, be it
| ||||||
15 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE | ||||||
16 | HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that | ||||||
17 | we mourn the passing of Evelyn Alexander and extend our | ||||||
18 | sincere condolences to her family, friends, and all who knew | ||||||
19 | and loved her; and be it further

20 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
21 | presented to the family of Evelyn Alexander as an expression | ||||||
22 | of our deepest sympathy.
