1 | HOUSE RESOLUTION
| ||||||
2 | WHEREAS, In order to bring more inclusivity to the state, | ||||||
3 | Illinois must discuss the importance of disability awareness; | ||||||
4 | and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, Disability awareness means educating people | ||||||
6 | regarding disabilities and giving people the knowledge | ||||||
7 | required to carry out a job or task, thus separating good | ||||||
8 | practice from poor; and
| ||||||
9 | WHEREAS, Many kids with disabilities are being integrated | ||||||
10 | into the mainstream of the public school system so age | ||||||
11 | appropriate education and refreshers are becoming even more | ||||||
12 | important to teach our children; and
| ||||||
13 | WHEREAS, In order to achieve a successful integration, it | ||||||
14 | is important to implement disability awareness for all | ||||||
15 | children across the state; and
| ||||||
16 | WHEREAS, One of the biggest barriers people with | ||||||
17 | disabilities encounter on a daily basis is other people; and
| ||||||
18 | WHEREAS, Between 2009 and 2015, individuals with | ||||||
19 | disabilities were more than twice as likely to be victims of | ||||||
20 | violent victimization compared to people without disabilities; |

2 | WHEREAS, In one study, only 39 percent of respondents with | ||||||
3 | disabilities reported that they had disclosed their disability | ||||||
4 | to a manager, and an even fewer 24 percent had told other | ||||||
5 | colleagues for fear of teasing, harassment, and potential | ||||||
6 | changes in coworker relationships; and
| ||||||
7 | WHEREAS, A research team reviewed information from the | ||||||
8 | U.S. 2012 elections and found that almost a third of voters | ||||||
9 | with disabilities experienced some kind of difficulty in the | ||||||
10 | voting process; this differed greatly from those without | ||||||
11 | disabilities; and
| ||||||
12 | WHEREAS, The only way to stop these violent crimes and | ||||||
13 | open discrimination against those with disabilities is to | ||||||
14 | bring awareness to the issue and help educate people about the | ||||||
15 | issues facing those with a disability; therefore, be it
| ||||||
16 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE | ||||||
17 | HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that | ||||||
18 | we acknowledge the hardships faced by those with a disability | ||||||
19 | and the need to increase education and awareness of these | ||||||
20 | issues for people throughout the State of Illinois; and be it | ||||||
21 | further

1 | RESOLVED, That we encourage all citizens to educate | ||||||
2 | themselves on the issues surrounding disabilities and to treat | ||||||
3 | those with disabilities with love and respect.
