2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of | ||||||
3 | Representatives wish to recognize the life and service of | ||||||
4 | former State Representative Daniel Marshall Pierce, who passed | ||||||
5 | away on February 13, 2020; and
| ||||||
6 | WHEREAS, Rep. Pierce was born in Chicago on March 31, | ||||||
7 | 1928; he moved to the North Shore when he was young and | ||||||
8 | graduated from New Trier High School in Winnetka; and
| ||||||
9 | WHEREAS, Rep. Pierce earned an undergraduate and a law | ||||||
10 | degree from Harvard University and later served in the United | ||||||
11 | States Air Force Judge Advocate General's Corps during the | ||||||
12 | Korean War; and
| ||||||
13 | WHEREAS, Rep. Pierce began his career in the Illinois | ||||||
14 | House in 1965 as a part of the legendary election involving the | ||||||
15 | "Bed Sheet Ballot," a 33-inch long, 236-candidate ballot for | ||||||
16 | all 177 seats in the Illinois House of Representatives; he was | ||||||
17 | one of the three representatives of the 32nd District; during | ||||||
18 | his time in the Illinois House, he served as Chairman of the | ||||||
19 | House Revenue Committee, the Mental Health Investigating | ||||||
20 | Committee, the Energy and Environment Committee, the Illinois | ||||||
21 | Economic Fiscal Commission, and the Energy Resources | ||||||
22 | Commission; he retired from the House in 1983; and |

1 | WHEREAS, Rep. Pierce continued his life of public service | ||||||
2 | after his time in the Illinois House; he was elected Mayor of | ||||||
3 | Highland Park in 1987 and reelected in 1991; he served a final | ||||||
4 | term after being elected again in 1999; and | ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, Rep. Pierce served as a member of the North Shore | ||||||
6 | Water Reclamation District, beginning in 2004; he served as | ||||||
7 | president from 2006 until his passing in 2020; and | ||||||
8 | WHEREAS, Rep. Pierce served as a Democratic State Central | ||||||
9 | Committeeman for the 10th Congressional District; and
| ||||||
10 | WHEREAS, Rep. Pierce was a loving husband and father and | ||||||
11 | was survived by his wife, Rhoda Pierce, three sons, and two | ||||||
12 | stepsons; and
| ||||||
13 | WHEREAS, Rep. Pierce was a mentor to many elected | ||||||
14 | officials; he served with humility and conviction and believed | ||||||
15 | deeply in bipartisanship; he was a friend to so many; | ||||||
16 | therefore, be it

17 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE | ||||||
18 | HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that | ||||||
19 | we recognize the life and service of former State | ||||||
20 | Representative Daniel Marshall Pierce; and be it further

1 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
2 | presented to Rep. Pierce's wife, Rhoda, as a symbol of our | ||||||
3 | gratitude for his work in this body and his lifetime of public | ||||||
4 | service.
