HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, According to the Centers for Disease Control,
3heart disease is the leading cause of death for men, women, and
4people of most racial and ethnic groups in the United States;
5and
 
6    WHEREAS, Every 36 seconds, one person dies in the United
7States from cardiovascular disease; about 655,000 Americans
8die from heart disease each year, which accounts for one in
9every four deaths; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Including the cost of health care services,
11medicines, and lost productivity, the costs of heart disease
12to the United States are estimated in the hundreds of billions
13of dollars; and
 
14    WHEREAS, In the United States, someone has a heart attack
15every 40 seconds; every year, approximately 805,000 Americans
16have a heart attack with about 605,000 being a first heart
17attack; and
 
18    WHEREAS, According to the Centers for Disease Control, an
19estimated 80 percent of heart disease is preventable; and
 
20    WHEREAS, While nationwide programs assist in awareness and

1education, it is imperative that each state increase its
2efforts locally, regionally, and statewide to educate its
3citizens about heart disease, including how to prevent it and
4how to keep our hearts healthy; and
 
5    WHEREAS, President Lyndon B. Johnson, who suffered from a
6heart attack, issued the first proclamation declaring February
7to be American Heart Month in 1964; and
 
8    WHEREAS, Increasing awareness of heart health is important
9to reducing the prevalence of heart disease and heart attacks;
10and
 
11    WHEREAS, Promoting annual heart wellness checks, including
12cholesterol, blood pressure, and blood sugar tests, would
13increase the chances of preventing the onset of heart attack
14or heart disease; and
 
15    WHEREAS, A new test, the coronary calcium scan or heart
16scan, helps reveal a person's risk of heart disease before
17other warning signs appear by assisting the doctor in
18detecting and measuring calcium containing plaque in the
19arteries; therefore, be it
 
20    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
21HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that

1we acknowledge the importance of heart health, including the
2importance of coronary calcium scans or heart scans, in
3preventing the onset of a heart attack or heart disease, and we
4acknowledge the need to increase education and awareness of
5heart health locally, regionally, and throughout the State of
6Illinois; and be it further
 
7    RESOLVED, That we encourage citizens to obtain critical
8annual heart wellness tests.
