2 | | WHEREAS, According to the Centers for Disease Control, |
3 | | heart disease is the leading cause of death for men, women, and |
4 | | people of most racial and ethnic groups in the United States; |
5 | | and
|
6 | | WHEREAS, Every 36 seconds, one person dies in the United |
7 | | States from cardiovascular disease; about 655,000 Americans |
8 | | die from heart disease each year, which accounts for one in |
9 | | every four deaths; and |
10 | | WHEREAS, Including the cost of health care services, |
11 | | medicines, and lost productivity, the costs of heart disease |
12 | | to the United States are estimated in the hundreds of billions |
13 | | of dollars; and |
14 | | WHEREAS, In the United States, someone has a heart attack |
15 | | every 40 seconds; every year, approximately 805,000 Americans |
16 | | have a heart attack with about 605,000 being a first heart |
17 | | attack; and |
18 | | WHEREAS, According to the Centers for Disease Control, an |
19 | | estimated 80 percent of heart disease is preventable; and |
20 | | WHEREAS, While nationwide programs assist in awareness and |

1 | | education, it is imperative that each state increase its |
2 | | efforts locally, regionally, and statewide to educate its |
3 | | citizens about heart disease, including how to prevent it and |
4 | | how to keep our hearts healthy; and
|
5 | | WHEREAS, President Lyndon B. Johnson, who suffered from a |
6 | | heart attack, issued the first proclamation declaring February |
7 | | to be American Heart Month in 1964; and
|
8 | | WHEREAS, Increasing awareness of heart health is important |
9 | | to reducing the prevalence of heart disease and heart attacks; |
10 | | and
|
11 | | WHEREAS, Promoting annual heart wellness checks, including |
12 | | cholesterol, blood pressure, and blood sugar tests, would |
13 | | increase the chances of preventing the onset of heart attack |
14 | | or heart disease; and
|
15 | | WHEREAS, A new test, the coronary calcium scan or heart |
16 | | scan, helps reveal a person's risk of heart disease before |
17 | | other warning signs appear by assisting the doctor in |
18 | | detecting and measuring calcium containing plaque in the |
19 | | arteries; therefore, be it
|
20 | | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE |
21 | | HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that |

1 | | we acknowledge the importance of heart health, including the |
2 | | importance of coronary calcium scans or heart scans, in |
3 | | preventing the onset of a heart attack or heart disease, and we |
4 | | acknowledge the need to increase education and awareness of |
5 | | heart health locally, regionally, and throughout the State of |
6 | | Illinois; and be it further

7 | | RESOLVED, That we encourage citizens to obtain critical |
8 | | annual heart wellness tests.
