| 1 | HOUSE RESOLUTION
| ||||||
| 2 | WHEREAS, Dairy animals have provided people around the | ||||||
| 3 | globe with a reliable and abundant source of milk and | ||||||
| 4 | milk-based products, such as butter, yogurt, various kinds of | ||||||
| 5 | cheese, ice cream, milk, and concentrated and dry milk | ||||||
| 6 | products; and
| ||||||
| 7 | WHEREAS, Nutrient-rich dairy foods play an important role | ||||||
| 8 | in child and adult nutrition and are good sources of several | ||||||
| 9 | vital nutrients, including calcium, potassium, vitamins D and | ||||||
| 10 | A, protein, and phosphorus; and
| ||||||
| 11 | WHEREAS, Eating nutritious dairy foods, such as milk, | ||||||
| 12 | cheese, and yogurt, improves bone health, especially in | ||||||
| 13 | children and adolescents, and is associated with reduced risk | ||||||
| 14 | of cardiovascular disease and lower blood pressure in adults | ||||||
| 15 | and a reduced risk of Type 2 diabetes; and | ||||||
| 16 | WHEREAS, Global demand for protein-rich dairy products is | ||||||
| 17 | rising, and the nation's dairy exports have more than | ||||||
| 18 | quadrupled since 2000, to nearly $5 billion in 2016; and | ||||||
| 19 | WHEREAS, The nation's top five export markets include | ||||||
| 20 | Mexico ($1.2 billion in sales), Southeast Asia ($671 million | ||||||
| 21 | in sales), Canada ($632 million in sales), China ($384 million | ||||||
| |||||||
| |||||||
| 1 | in sales), and South America ($280 million in sales); and
| ||||||
| 2 | WHEREAS, Illinois has over 84,000 dairy cows, and Illinois | ||||||
| 3 | milk production was 1.748 billion pounds in 2019 and 1.631 | ||||||
| 4 | billion pounds for the first 11 months of 2020; and
| ||||||
| 5 | WHEREAS, Illinois ranked 3rd in Ag exports to the world in | ||||||
| 6 | 2019 with approximately $7.5 billion, in which dairy was the | ||||||
| 7 | 7th highest product category (fresh dairy to cheese, etc.) at | ||||||
| 8 | $232M in 2019 and $168M through the first three-fourths of | ||||||
| 9 | 2020; and
| ||||||
| 10 | WHEREAS, It is important to increase the exportation of | ||||||
| 11 | dairy products from Illinois in the global economy to provide | ||||||
| 12 | additional jobs for citizens of the State, to boost the | ||||||
| 13 | State's economy and to provide citizens of other nations with | ||||||
| 14 | wholesome, fresh dairy foods; therefore, be it
| ||||||
| 15 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE | ||||||
| 16 | HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that | ||||||
| 17 | we urge the United States Department of Agriculture and the | ||||||
| 18 | United States Department of Commerce to increase the | ||||||
| 19 | exportation of Illinois dairy products to other nations; and | ||||||
| 20 | be it further
| ||||||
| 21 | RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be | ||||||

| 1 | delivered to the Governor of Illinois, the Illinois Department | ||||||
| 2 | of Agriculture, the United States Department of Agriculture | ||||||
| 3 | and the United States Department of Commerce.
