2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of | ||||||
3 | Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Sister | ||||||
4 | Thomas Leo Monahan, O.P., who passed away on November 13, | ||||||
5 | 2020; and
| ||||||
6 | WHEREAS, Sr. Thomas Leo was born in Chicago to Roy and | ||||||
7 | Kathryn (Devine) Monahan on September 20, 1929; she was | ||||||
8 | baptized Kathleen Monahan; she graduated from Amundsen High | ||||||
9 | School in Chicago; she received her Bachelor of Philosophy in | ||||||
10 | History from Siena Heights University in Adrian, Michigan; she | ||||||
11 | earned her Master of Arts in History and her Master of | ||||||
12 | Education in Administration/School Supervision from DePaul | ||||||
13 | University in Chicago; and
| ||||||
14 | WHEREAS, Sr. Thomas Leo entered the Convent of the Adrian | ||||||
15 | Dominican Sisters in Adrian, Michigan on June 24, 1951, and | ||||||
16 | she professed her simple vows on December 28, 1952; and
| ||||||
17 | WHEREAS, Sr. Thomas Leo ministered in elementary education | ||||||
18 | for 61 years in Detroit, Michigan and Toledo, Ohio, in | ||||||
19 | addition to Chicago, Mundelein, and Elmhurst; and
| ||||||
20 | WHEREAS, Sr. Thomas Leo spent 40 years at the Visitation | ||||||
21 | School in Elmhurst, where she served as principal for 38 |

1 | years; and
| ||||||
2 | WHEREAS, Sr. Thomas Leo established the Sister Thomas Leo | ||||||
3 | Monahan Legacy Fund, providing tuition assistance for families | ||||||
4 | seeking a Catholic education at the Visitation School; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, For her dedication to the Visitation School and | ||||||
6 | the entire Elmhurst community, Sr. Thomas Leo was named 2013's | ||||||
7 | Friend of the Children by the Elmhurst Children's Assistance | ||||||
8 | Foundation; and
| ||||||
9 | WHEREAS, Sr. Thomas Leo was respected and loved by her | ||||||
10 | students and their families, numbering in the thousands; she | ||||||
11 | will be remembered for her kindness, her selfless nature, and | ||||||
12 | her special ability to make everyone she met feel comfortable | ||||||
13 | and important; and
| ||||||
14 | WHEREAS, Sr. Thomas Leo lived a life of grace; she | ||||||
15 | exemplified a life of devotion and commitment to her faith and | ||||||
16 | good works; she deserves our thanks, gratitude, and words that | ||||||
17 | say, "Well done, good and faithful servant."; therefore, be it
| ||||||
18 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE | ||||||
19 | HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, THE | ||||||
20 | SENATE CONCURRING HEREIN, that we mourn the passing of Sister | ||||||
21 | Thomas Leo Monahan, O.P., and extend our sincere condolences |

1 | to her family, friends, and all who knew and loved her; and be | ||||||
2 | it further

3 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
