2 | | Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
|
3 | | represented in the General Assembly:
|
4 | | Section 5. The Pharmacy Practice Act is amended by |
5 | | changing Section 17.1 as follows:
|
6 | | (225 ILCS 85/17.1)
|
7 | | (Section scheduled to be repealed on January 1, 2023)
|
8 | | Sec. 17.1. Registered pharmacy technician training.
|
9 | | (a) It shall be the joint responsibility of a
pharmacy
and |
10 | | its pharmacist in charge to have trained all of its registered |
11 | | pharmacy technicians
or obtain
proof of prior training in all |
12 | | of the following practice areas as they apply to Illinois law |
13 | | and relate to the
specific practice site and job |
14 | | responsibilities:
|
15 | | (1) The duties and responsibilities of the technicians |
16 | | and pharmacists.
|
17 | | (2) Tasks and technical skills, policies, and |
18 | | procedures.
|
19 | | (3) Compounding, packaging, labeling, and storage.
|
20 | | (4) Pharmaceutical and medical terminology.
|
21 | | (5) Record keeping requirements.
|
22 | | (6) The ability to perform and apply arithmetic |
23 | | calculations.

1 | | Beginning January 1, 2024, it shall also be the joint |
2 | | responsibility of a pharmacy and its pharmacist in charge to |
3 | | ensure that all new pharmacy technicians are educated and |
4 | | trained using a standard nationally accredited education and |
5 | | training program, such as those accredited by the |
6 | | Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE)/the |
7 | | American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) , a |
8 | | program recognized by the Pharmacy Technician Certification |
9 | | Board, or other board approved education and training |
10 | | programs. The pharmacist in charge is not required to provide |
11 | | the required education to the pharmacy technician, but the |
12 | | pharmacist in charge must ensure that the pharmacy technician |
13 | | has presented proof that he or she completed a standard |
14 | | nationally accredited or board approved education and training |
15 | | program. |
16 | | (b) Within 2 years of initial licensure as a pharmacy |
17 | | technician and within 6 months before beginning any new duties |
18 | | and
responsibilities of a registered pharmacy technician, it
|
19 | | shall be
the joint responsibility of the pharmacy and the |
20 | | pharmacist in charge to
train the registered
pharmacy |
21 | | technician or obtain proof of prior training in the areas |
22 | | listed in
subsection (a)
of this Section as they relate to the |
23 | | practice site or to document that the pharmacy technician is |
24 | | making appropriate progress.

25 | | (c) All pharmacies shall maintain an up-to-date training
|
26 | | program policies and procedures manual
describing the duties |
