Amends the Expressway Camera Act. Provides that images from expressway cameras may be used by any municipal police department, county sheriff's office, State Police officer, or other law enforcement agency with jurisdiction over the expressway in Cook County in the investigation of any violent offenses, including, but not limited to, offenses involving the use of a firearm and vehicular hijacking. Provides that images from expressway cameras may be used by any law enforcement agency conducting an active law enforcement investigation involving a violent offense.

2 | | Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,

3 | | represented in the General Assembly:

4 | | Section 5. The Expressway Camera Act is amended by |
5 | | changing Section 5 as follows: |
6 | | (605 ILCS 140/5)

7 | | (Section scheduled to be repealed on July 1, 2023) |
8 | | Sec. 5. Camera program. |
9 | | (a) The Illinois State Police, the Illinois Department of
|
10 | | Transportation, and the Illinois State Toll Highway Authority
|
11 | | shall work together to conduct a program to increase the |
12 | | amount
of cameras along expressways in Cook County. |
13 | | (b) Images from the cameras may be used by any municipal |
14 | | police department, county sheriff's office, State Police |
15 | | officer, or other law enforcement agency with jurisdiction |
16 | | over the expressway in Cook County in the investigation of any |
17 | | violent offenses, including, but not limited to, offenses |
18 | | involving the use of a firearm and vehicular hijacking, any |
19 | | offense involving the use of a firearm and to detect |
20 | | expressway hazards. Images from the cameras shall not be used |
21 | | to enforce petty offenses. Images from the cameras may be used |
22 | | by any law enforcement agency conducting an active law |
23 | | enforcement investigation involving a violent offense. |
