Amends the School Code. Beginning with the 2021-2022 school year, requires a school district to include in its curriculum an annual unit of instruction on the Spanish language. Provides that the State Board of Education may prepare and make available to all school boards resource materials that may be used as guidelines for the development of the unit of instruction. Effective immediately.

1 | | AN ACT concerning education.
|
2 | | Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
|
3 | | represented in the General Assembly:
|
4 | | Section 5. The School Code is amended by adding Section |
5 | | 27-23.15 as follows: |
6 | | (105 ILCS 5/27-23.15 new) |
7 | | Sec. 27-23.15. Spanish language course. |
8 | | (a) Beginning with the 2021-2022 school year, a school |
9 | | district shall include in its curriculum an annual unit of |
10 | | instruction on the Spanish language. Each student in grades |
11 | | kindergarten through 12 shall receive this unit of instruction |
12 | | every year. |
13 | | (b) The State Board of Education may prepare and make |
14 | | available to all school boards resource materials that may be |
15 | | used as guidelines for the development of the unit of |
16 | | instruction required per grade year under this Section.

17 | | Section 99. Effective date. This Act takes effect upon |
18 | | becoming law.
