SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Leland Gene "Lee" Zimmerman of Eureka,
4who passed away on October 17, 2020; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Lee Zimmerman was born in Eureka to Lawrence and
6Lena (Leman) Zimmerman on December 18, 1933; he served in the
7U.S. military during the Korean War; he married Laurene
8Schambach in Elgin on June 14, 1959, and she preceded him in
9death on December 30, 1999; he married Barbara Ringger in
10Eureka on March 10, 2002; and
 
11    WHEREAS, Following the retirement of their parents, Lee
12Zimmerman and his sister, Caroll, owned and operated the C & L
13Superette; after closing the family grocery business in 1977,
14he worked at Ben Schwartz IGA and Eureka IGA, retiring in 1998;
15he also founded and operated The Ice House, which made and
16distributed ice to local businesses; he founded and operated
17Lee's Metals, which provided the local community a place to
18bring in various metals and other recyclable goods; his love of
19people and serving others led him to working for the Morton
20Community Bank in his retirement, where he provided courier
21services and could share his smile and bring a smile to
22everyone's face; and

1    WHEREAS, Lee Zimmerman was affectionately known as
2"Gramps" by his grandchildren; he was an engaging story teller;
3he was a member of the Eureka Apostolic Christian Church, where
4he was baptized on January 18, 1953; he served many years as a
5Sunday school teacher, song leader, and trustee; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Lee Zimmerman was preceded in death by his first
7wife, Laurene; his parents; his infant sister, Twila Zimmerman;
8his sister, Caroll Zobrist; his son-in-law, Fred Leman; and his
9grandsons, Gabriel Leman and Samson Zimmerman; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Lee Zimmerman is survived by his wife, Barbara;
11his children, Mark (Cheryl) Zimmerman, Denise (Kevin) Kilgus,
12Brenda (Jay) Hartman, Michael (Gretchen) Zimmerman, and
13Matthew (Sara) Zimmerman; 25 grandchildren; and 34
14great-grandchildren; therefore, be it
 
15    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL
16ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
17Leland Gene "Lee" Zimmerman and extend our sincere condolences
18to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be
19it further
 
20    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
21presented to the family of Lee Zimmerman as an expression of
22our deepest sympathy.
