2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to | ||||||
3 | learn of the death of David Burton Mercier of Kappa, who passed | ||||||
4 | away on September 20, 2020; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, David Mercier was born to E. Burton C. and Mary L. | ||||||
6 | Gooding Mercier in Bloomington on September 10, 1950; he | ||||||
7 | graduated from University High School in 1968; the summer after | ||||||
8 | high school, he studied computer and electrical engineering at | ||||||
9 | Carnegie Mellon University; he then studied business marketing | ||||||
10 | and chemical engineering at the University of Colorado Boulder | ||||||
11 | where he graduated in 1974; his studies also included time at | ||||||
12 | Illinois State
University; he was a proud U.S. Marine who | ||||||
13 | completed Officer Candidate School at Quantico and was | ||||||
14 | honorably discharged; he married Gladys F. Tietz in New York | ||||||
15 | City on February 14, 1980; and
| ||||||
16 | WHEREAS, After school, David Mercier moved to
New York City | ||||||
17 | to work as a research analyst for the National Broadcasting | ||||||
18 | Company (NBC); he also held positions as a research analyst at | ||||||
19 | Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette and as a programmer at Chase Bank; | ||||||
20 | he then started Micro Applications Systems in Port Washington, | ||||||
21 | New York; he returned to Bloomington in 1989 and worked as vice | ||||||
22 | president at Bloomington Offset Process; he was also the | ||||||
23 | founder of Dave's World which was an internet services provider |

1 | for home internet; his final career position was as chairman at | ||||||
2 | Starnet Digital Publishing; and
| ||||||
3 | WHEREAS, David Mercier was a proud member of the Sigma Chi | ||||||
4 | fraternity; he was also a Mason with Normal Lodge 673 and a | ||||||
5 | member of the Valley of Bloomington Scottish Rite; he was a | ||||||
6 | Charter Member of the Bloomington Normal Sunrise Rotary where | ||||||
7 | he served as president from 1991 to 1992 and was named a Paul | ||||||
8 | Harris Fellow in 1992; and
| ||||||
9 | WHEREAS, David Mercier had many hobbies, including flying, | ||||||
10 | fishing, hunting, golfing, rocketry, and rock and gem | ||||||
11 | collecting; he was an avid reader and always had a wealth of | ||||||
12 | knowledge to share; he considered himself a wine aficionado and | ||||||
13 | was a friend to everyone he met; and
| ||||||
14 | WHEREAS, David Mercier was preceded in death by his father, | ||||||
15 | E. Burton Mercier; his maternal grandparents, John C. and | ||||||
16 | Frances Gooding; and his paternal grandparents, Charles and | ||||||
17 | Ruth Mercier; and
| ||||||
18 | WHEREAS, David Mercier is survived by his wife of 40 years, | ||||||
19 | Gladys F. Mercier; his daughter, Meredith (Pedro) Diaz; his | ||||||
20 | grandchildren, Viviana and Owen Diaz; his mother, Mary L. | ||||||
21 | Mercier; his sisters, Karen (Rich) Crusius and Mary Jo (Sandy) | ||||||
22 | Adams; his brother, Tom (Sandy) Mercier; his several nieces and |

1 | nephews; his great-nieces and great-nephews; and his black lab | ||||||
2 | puppy, Ruby; therefore, be it
| ||||||
3 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL | ||||||
4 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
| ||||||
5 | David Burton Mercier and extend our sincere
condolences to his | ||||||
6 | family, friends, and all who knew and loved
him; and be it | ||||||
7 | further
| ||||||
8 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
| ||||||
9 | presented to the family of David Mercier as an expression of
| ||||||
10 | our deepest sympathy.
