SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Jean A. Herbst of Joliet, who passed away
4on August 8, 2020; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Jean Herbst was born in Joliet to Martin and Anna
6(Buchar) Juricic on December 28, 1935; she attended St. Joseph
7Grade School; she graduated from St. Francis Academy in 1953;
8she married Gerald "Jerry" Herbst at St. Joseph Catholic Church
9in Joliet on November 13, 1954, and he preceded her in death in
102015; and
 
11    WHEREAS, Jean Herbst was a dedicated employee of the
12Ordinance Ammunition Command (OAC), the Argonne National
13Laboratory, the College of St. Francis, and the Burr Oak
14Library System; and
 
15    WHEREAS, Jean Herbst was extremely generous in sharing her
16time, talents, and treasures; while raising her own children,
17she was an integral member of the Troy Grade School and Joliet
18West High School band programs, and she served as the secretary
19and uniform manager for the latter; she spent countless hours
20crocheting hats for service men and women, which were
21distributed though Operation Care Package; she also made baby
22blankets, which were donated to Birthright; and

1    WHEREAS, Jean Herbst was deeply committed to her faith, and
2she was very active in the church community; she was a member
3of the St. Agnes Sodality and the Blessed Virgin Mary Society
4at St. Joseph Parish, the Sacred Heart League at St. John the
5Baptist Parish, the Council of Catholic Women, the Junior
6Catholic Women's League, and KSKJ – St. Genevieve Lodge #108;
7she served in a number of leadership positions, including
8treasurer of the Slovenian Union of America (formerly Slovenian
9Women's Union of America) and chairperson of the respect for
10life and the vocation committees of St. Ambrose Parish; she was
11honored as Woman of the Year by the Council of Catholic Women
12in 2002 and by the Slovenian Union of America in 2006; and
 
13    WHEREAS, Alongside her husband, Jean Herbst was an active
14participant of the Organ Transplant Support Group (OTS) in
15Naperville and spent numerous hours volunteering at the
16Illinois Driver's License Facility; they were honored with the
17Presidential Award from OTS for their contributions in
18promoting organ donation and organ donor awareness in the
19community in 2004; and
 
20    WHEREAS, Jean Herbst was known for her affable personality,
21her kindness, her gentleness, and her gift of conversation; she
22enjoyed gardening and watching the wildlife in her yard; she
23will be remembered for being a devoted wife, mother, and

1grandmother; and
 
2    WHEREAS, Jean Herbst was preceded in death by her husband
3of 60 years, Gerald R. "Jerry" Herbst; her parents; her sister,
4Joyce (late Richard) Korst; her nephew, Alan Kopta; her
5father-in-law and mother-in-law, Alois and Marie (Welter)
6Herbst; and her numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins; and
 
7    WHEREAS, Jean Herbst is survived by her children, Rev.
8Robert M. Herbst, Rita (Herbst) Bottomley, and Renee Herbst;
9her granddaughter, Elaine Bottomley; her godchildren, Marilyn
10Boucher, Jerry Buchar, Tiffany McEachern, and Timothy Human;
11and her numerous family members and friends; therefore, be it
 
12    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL
13ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
14Jean A. Herbst and extend our sincere condolences to her
15family, friends, and all who knew and loved; and be it further
 
16    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
17presented to the family of Jean Herbst as an expression of our
18deepest sympathy.
