SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Charles Richard "Charlie" Hoogland of
4Springfield, who passed away on June 25, 2020; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Charlie Hoogland was born to Clarence and Euna
6Alexander Hoogland in 1930; he attended Springfield High
7School; he graduated from Yale University in 1952, where he
8completed the Naval ROTC program and was a member of the Yale
9Record and the Beta Theta Pi Fraternity; he served in the U.S.
10Navy as a 1st Lieutenant during the Korean War; he married
11Kathleen Knox McLain in Springfield on July 4, 1953, and they
12had five children together; and
 
13    WHEREAS, Charlie Hoogland started his career at Midstates
14Appliance & Supply Co., a company that his father started in
151946, which was the first wholesale distributor to bring
16SuperBalls, mood rings, hula hoops, PopAir popcorn machines,
17and Sony electronics to the Midwest; he then transitioned the
18company, becoming the founder and CEO of Family Video; he began
19to expand the company by finding locations on his drive from
20Springfield to his summer home in Wequetonsing, Michigan; he
21built Family Video to include 800 stores with over 10,000
22employees, becoming the third-largest video store chain in the
23country; he was extremely proud of building a family business;

1his son Keith is now the CEO of the company, and his grandson
2McLain is the first of the fourth generation to work at the
3company; and
 
4    WHEREAS, Charlie Hoogland created the Hoogland Family
5Foundation, one of his greatest accomplishments; through his
6foundation, he gave substantial gifts to several organizations
7and causes, including the Hoogland Center of the Arts, the
8University of Chicago Hoogland Biobank, immunotherapy research
9at the University of Chicago, lymphoma research at Stanford
10University, the Vanderbilt University, Hillsdale College, the
11University of Illinois-Springfield, the Springfield YMCA, and
12the Little Traverse Conservancy; and
 
13    WHEREAS, Charlie Hoogland enjoyed golfing, solving
14puzzles, running the 4th of July 10-mile race, snorkeling,
15playing bridge, and reading; he spent 60 consecutive 4th of
16Julys with his family in Harbor Springs, Michigan; and
 
17    WHEREAS, Charlie Hoogland was known as someone who was
18never afraid to fail and was always the first to the party; he
19will be remembered for his entrepreneurial spirit and
20patriotism; he loved his wife, his family, and his country; he
21will be deeply missed; and
 
22    WHEREAS, Charlie Hoogland was preceded in death by his

1parents; his daughter, Samantha Knox Hoogland; and his
2grandson, Robert Stults Hoogland; and
 
3    WHEREAS, Charlie Hoogland is survived by his wife of 67
4years, Kathleen; his children, Charles Eric Hoogland (Laurie),
5Keith Alexander Hoogland (Susan), Kathleen Knox Hoogland, and
6Eliza Hoogland Reynolds (Tim); 16 grandchildren; and five
7great-grandsons; therefore, be it
 
8    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL
9ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
10Charles Richard "Charlie" Hoogland and extend our sincere
11condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved
12him; and be it further
 
13    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
14presented to the family of Charlie Hoogland as an expression of
15our deepest sympathy.
