|
2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to |
3 | | learn of the death of Jerome Herman "Jerry" Onan, who passed |
4 | | away on February 14, 2020; and
|
5 | | WHEREAS, Jerry Onan was born in Waukegan to Thomas and |
6 | | Ashen Onan on November 13, 1934; he graduated from St. Joseph |
7 | | Grade School in 1948 and then attended Waukegan Township High |
8 | | School, where he excelled in wrestling and football and his |
9 | | studies; he attended Cornell College in Mount Vernon, Iowa on |
10 | | an athletic scholarship for wrestling and football; and
|
11 | | WHEREAS, Jerry Onan graduated from Cornell College in 1957 |
12 | | and entered the U.S. Navy in 1958; he attended Officer |
13 | | Candidate School and was commissioned an Ensign; he was sent to |
14 | | the Navy Supply Corps School in Athens, Georgia and then |
15 | | assigned as Supply Officer USS Forest Royal DD-872; his next |
16 | | assignment was Supply Officer NAS in Lakehurst, New Jersey; he |
17 | | was released from active duty in 1961 with the rank of |
18 | | Lieutenant; and
|
19 | | WHEREAS, Jerry Onan worked in Chicago, New York City, and |
20 | | Florida for the US Testing Company; he resigned to attend the |
21 | | Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University, where |
22 | | he received a Master of Business Administration; after |
|

1 | | graduating, he joined the American Broadcasting Company (ABC) |
2 | | in New York City; he eventually returned home and joined his |
3 | | brothers Jim and John at Onan Garages in Waukegan, where he |
4 | | worked for many years; and |
5 | | WHEREAS, Jerry Onan ran for Mayor of Waukegan in 1989; and |
6 | | WHEREAS, Jerry Onan practiced Yoga and spent many hours in |
7 | | meditation; he enjoyed gardening and became a Master Gardener |
8 | | through the University of Illinois extension in Grayslake; he |
9 | | also enjoyed intellectual conversation about any topic; and |
10 | | WHEREAS, Jerry Onan devotedly cared for his mother during |
11 | | her last days; he and his niece Cindy shared a close |
12 | | relationship and collaborated on writing and publishing a book, |
13 | | the Magic of Self-Discipline; and
|
14 | | WHEREAS, Jerry Onan was preceded in death by his brother |
15 | | and sister-in-law, John (Eloise) Onan, and his parents, Thomas |
16 | | and Ashen Onan; and
|
17 | | WHEREAS, Jerry Onan is survived by his brothers and |
18 | | sisters-in-law, Thomas (Harriet) and James (Linda) Onan; his |
19 | | nieces and nephews, Cynthia (Thomas) Cramer, Robert (Amy) Onan, |
20 | | Deborah (Dominic) Vivona, Mary (John) Lohmann, James Onan, John |
21 | | Onan, Joseph (Loretta) Onan, Gina Onan, and Thomas Rocko |

1 | | (Jeanne) Onan; his long-time buddy, Art Wancho; and numerous |
2 | | grandnieces and grandnephews, cousins, and friends; therefore, |

4 | | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL |
5 | | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of |
6 | | Jerome Herman "Jerry" Onan and extend our sincere condolences |
7 | | to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be |
8 | | it further

9 | | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be |
10 | | presented to the family of Jerry Onan as an expression of our |
11 | | deepest sympathy.
