2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to | ||||||
3 | learn of the death of Emily "Jean" Johnson of Peoria, who | ||||||
4 | passed away on April 19, 2020; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, Jean Johnson was born in Pekin to Victor Alfs and | ||||||
6 | Alice (Boyer) Alfs on September 6, 1929; she was a lifelong | ||||||
7 | resident of the greater Peoria area; she attended Woodruff High | ||||||
8 | School, where she served as editor of the annual Talisman | ||||||
9 | yearbook, and she graduated in 1948; she married Thomas L. | ||||||
10 | "Tom" Johnson in April 1951, and he passed in 2013; and
| ||||||
11 | WHEREAS, Jean Johnson was a homemaker during her children's | ||||||
12 | school years, and she actively promoted learning experiences | ||||||
13 | for grammar school-aged children; she co-founded and was a | ||||||
14 | 10-year member of the Von Steuben Grade School Mothers' Club; | ||||||
15 | through this organization, she arranged and chaperoned guided | ||||||
16 | tours of Glen Oak Zoo and area fire stations; she also produced | ||||||
17 | fashion shows for parents and children; and
| ||||||
18 | WHEREAS, Jean Johnson became an executive secretary for the | ||||||
19 | Peoria Public Schools (PPS), District #150, in 1969; she held | ||||||
20 | key positions at the PPS administration building over the next | ||||||
21 | 29 years; notably, she served as the executive secretary to | ||||||
22 | Superintendent Harry Whitaker during the 1970s and 1980s; and

1 | WHEREAS, Jean Johnson enjoyed gardening and joined the | ||||||
2 | Peoria Garden Club in the 1990s; she served as secretary to the | ||||||
3 | High Point Neighborhood Association after she moved there with | ||||||
4 | her husband in 1994; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, Jean Johnson was deeply committed to her faith; | ||||||
6 | she became a member of the Forrest Hill United Methodist Church | ||||||
7 | (FHUMC) in Peoria in the 1960s and remained an active member | ||||||
8 | throughout her life; and
| ||||||
9 | WHEREAS, Jean Johnson was preceded in death by her parents; | ||||||
10 | her older sister, Donna (Alfs) Berte; and her husband of nearly | ||||||
11 | 63 years, Thomas L. Johnson; and
| ||||||
12 | WHEREAS, Jean Johnson is survived by her children, Philip | ||||||
13 | (Cathy) Johnson, Jual Ann "Julie" (Randy) Markillie, and | ||||||
14 | Jeffrey Johnson; her granddaughters, Jessica (Brady) Sammis | ||||||
15 | and Katrina (Nick) Craven; her grandsons, Benjamin and Bobby; | ||||||
16 | her four great-granddaughters; and her two nieces, Jane Waldron | ||||||
17 | and Janet Neale; therefore, be it

18 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL | ||||||
19 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of | ||||||
20 | Emily "Jean" Johnson and extend our sincere condolences to her | ||||||
21 | family, friends, and all who knew and loved her; and be it |
