SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, This body has previously recognized that the
3prison experience for women offenders is different than men and
4requires gender-focused efforts; and
 
5    WHEREAS, The Illinois Department of Corrections has 29
6adult prisons across the State; two of these correctional
7centers are dedicated to women inmates; and
 
8    WHEREAS, While a goal in all workplaces, gender parity
9should be a focus of the correctional field, particularly when
10involving women offenders; and
 
11    WHEREAS, The gender aspect should be taken into
12consideration in assignments within facilities under the
13jurisdiction of the Department of Corrections; and
 
14    WHEREAS, While female participation in law enforcement has
15risen, there still remains a gap in gender parity within the
16correctional field; and
 
17    WHEREAS, During fiscal year 2019, the Illinois Department
18of Corrections had 7,083 male and 1,457 female protective
19service employees; these workers are entrusted with public
20safety, security, and the protection of society from

1destructive forces; and
 
2    WHEREAS, The strengthening of the women workforce within
3the Department of Corrections should be a focus of the
4Department; therefore, be it
 
5    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL
6ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we urge the Illinois
7Department of Corrections to promote parity between male and
8female correctional officers in the State of Illinois; and be
9it further
 
10    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
11delivered to the Illinois Department of Corrections.
