SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Celestine "Bunchie" Jakes of Chicago, who
4passed away on January 9, 2020; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Celestine Jakes was born in Wabash, Arkansas to
6Reverend Johnnie James Sr. and Callie Jakes on January 11,
71947; she was the youngest of 10 children and enjoyed being the
8baby of her family; she graduated from Lakeview High School in
9Elaine, Arkansas in 1965; she followed many of her siblings and
10moved to Chicago; she organized, alongside her sisters, a
11social club called The Socialites; and
 
12    WHEREAS, Celestine Jakes was deeply committed to her faith;
13she was a member of the faith family of West Point Missionary
14Baptist Church in Chicago; formerly, she was a member of
15Liberty Baptist Church in Chicago and First New Christian
16Baptist Church in Los Angeles; and
 
17    WHEREAS, Celestine Jakes was a dedicated mother and modeled
18her parenting after her own parents; she was loving and
19compassionate and believed in discipline; she was also a loyal
20friend, especially to her siblings and her classmates at
21Lakeview High School; she believed in honesty and was
22forthright to a fault; and

1    WHEREAS, Celestine Jakes was preceded in death by her
2parents; her siblings, Betty Chapman, Cora Dandredge, Margaret
3Sledge, Pastor Paul L. Jakes Sr., and Johnnie James Jakes Jr.;
4and
 
5    WHEREAS, Celestine Jakes is survived by her children,
6LaChrisia Nannette Jakes, Dr. LaShawn Bernard (Carole) Jakes,
7and Davionne Brown Jakes; her grandchildren, Reginald
8(Sharena) Reed, Brandon Jakes, and Erika Jakes; her siblings,
9Elizabeth James, Sallie Pearl Sanders, Callie Beatrice Adams,
10and E. Willie (Lawana) Jakes; and those whom she considered as
11sons, Quincy B. Banks, Pastor Delbert Earl Wright, Dr. Charley
12Hames Jr., and Dr. S. Todd Yeary; therefore, be it
 
13    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL
14ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
15Celestine "Bunchie" Jakes and extend our sincere condolences to
16her family, friends, and all who knew and loved her; and be it
17further
 
18    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
19presented to the family of Celestine Jakes as an expression of
20our deepest sympathy.
