|
2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
|
3 | | learn of the death of Charles F. "Charley" Clarke Jr. of Lake |
4 | | Forest, who passed away on January 1, 2020; and
|
5 | | WHEREAS, Charles Clarke Jr. was born in Chicago to Virginie |
6 | | Dennehy Clarke and Charles F. Clarke Sr. on March 3, 1929; he |
7 | | attended the Bell School (class of 1942), Canterbury School |
8 | | (class of 1947), and Brown University (class of 1951), where he |
9 | | majored in Classics and made many friends in the DKE |
10 | | fraternity; he served as a Second Lieutenant in the Army during |
11 | | the Korean War from 1951 to 1953; he married Eleanor "Ellie" |
12 | | O'Connor in Palm Beach, Florida on January 3, 1959; and
|
13 | | WHEREAS, Once he left the service, Charles Clarke Jr. began |
14 | | his distinguished career in Chicago real estate; he began at |
15 | | Arthur Rubloff & Co. in 1956; he became Vice President in 1963; |
16 | | he was recruited by Sudler & Co. in 1965 and continued to work |
17 | | in commercial brokerage at Sudler for 39 years; his major |
18 | | assignments included leading the team to manage and lease the |
19 | | new John Hancock Center building, then the world's tallest, and |
20 | | the Water Tower Place; he also served on the boards of the Mid |
21 | | City Bank, Verado Energy, and the Greater North Michigan Avenue |
22 | | Association; and

1 | | WHEREAS, Charles Clarke Jr. had a long life of |
2 | | philanthropic work; he served on many non-profit boards, |
3 | | including the Canterbury School, The Rehabilitation Institute |
4 | | of Chicago, Catholic Charities (as President), Onwentsia Club |
5 | | (as President), the Otho S.A. Sprague Memorial Institute (as |
6 | | President), Barat College, and Lake Forest Hospital; he worked |
7 | | diligently for the City of Lake Forest, where he served on the |
8 | | Lake Forest City Planning Commission and its Zoning Board of |
9 | | Appeals; he also served as Mayor of Lake Forest from 1990 to |
10 | | 1993 (as had his father from 1943 to 1946); and
|
11 | | WHEREAS, Charles Clarke Jr. was an outdoorsman and loved |
12 | | traveling with his wife, kids, and grandchildren; he gave his |
13 | | children and grandchildren a love for nature with many trips |
14 | | out west, skiing, camping, hunting, fishing, and horseback |
15 | | riding; he especially enjoyed spending time with them in |
16 | | Telluride, Colorado; and
|
17 | | WHEREAS, Charles Clarke Jr. was preceded in death by his |
18 | | parents; his daughter, Eleanor M. Clarke; his brothers, John |
19 | | Clarke and Thomas Clarke; and his sister, Patricia Clarke |
20 | | Flynn; and
|
21 | | WHEREAS, Charles Clarke Jr. is survived by his wife, |
22 | | Eleanor O'Connor Clarke; his sister, Louise Clarke Hough; his |
23 | | children, Charles F. (Vanessa) Clarke III, Timothy S. Clarke, |

1 | | and Jay A. Clarke; his grandchildren, Arlo, Darby, Chase, |
2 | | Haley, and Ben Clarke, and Liam and Cora Bradley; and many |
3 | | nephews, nieces, and cousins; therefore, be it
|
4 | | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL |
5 | | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of |
6 | | Charles F. "Charley" Clarke Jr. and extend our sincere |
7 | | condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved |
8 | | him; and be it further

9 | | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be |
10 | | presented to the family of Charles F. Clarke Jr. as an |
11 | | expression of our deepest sympathy.
