SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Kathryn Williams Timmes of Peoria, who
4passed away on October 8, 2019; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Kathryn Timmes was born in Ashland, Kentucky to
6Almira and Willie Williams on January 10, 1931; she attended
7high school at the Swift Memorial Institute, a private boarding
8school in Rogersville, Tennessee; her undergraduate education
9was at Bennett College, an all-girls, historically-black
10college in Greensboro, North Carolina; and
 
11    WHEREAS, Kathryn Timmes began her career teaching fourth
12grade in New York City; after a few years, she moved to Peoria
13and worked at the Carver Center; after a year, she taught at
14the Spalding Institute and the Academy of Our Lady; she then
15began her 50-year career with District 150 and taught at
16Douglas Elementary School and counseled students at Manual and
17Woodruff High Schools; generations of young people came to know
18"Miss Timmes" as teacher, mentor, advisor, and adopted mom; and
 
19    WHEREAS, Kathryn Timmes was the first president of the
20Heritage Ensemble and a charter member of Delta Sigma Theta
21Sorority, Peoria Alumnae Chapter; she had many
22accomplishments, but her greatest pride and joy was her role as

1a wife, mother, and daughter; and
 
2    WHEREAS, Kathryn Timmes was preceded in death by her
3husband of 59 years, John Timmes, and her daughter, Janique
4"Jan"; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Kathryn Timmes is survived by her daughter,
6Johnna; her closest sister-girlfriend, Jeanne St. Julian; and
7numerous extended family members, church members, neighbors,
8friends, former students, and colleagues; therefore, be it
 
9    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL
10ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
11Kathryn Williams Timmes and extend our sincere condolences to
12her family, friends, and all who knew and loved her; and be it
13further
 
14    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
15presented to the family of Kathryn Timmes as an expression of
16our deepest sympathy.
