|
2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to |
3 | | learn of the death of Louise Turpin of Champaign, who passed |
4 | | away on September 18, 2019; and
|
5 | | WHEREAS, Louise Turpin was born in Olney to Ralph and |
6 | | Elizabeth VanMatre on March 11, 1933; she attended Southern |
7 | | Illinois University Carbondale, where she was a member of the |
8 | | Tri Sigma sorority; she married Jim Turpin on August 16, 1952; |
9 | | they raised their family in Springfield and Champaign; and
|
10 | | WHEREAS, Louise Turpin worked in international banking and |
11 | | safe deposit services at Busey Bank; and
|
12 | | WHEREAS, Louise Turpin was an active member of the |
13 | | community and volunteered for many organizations, including |
14 | | the Springfield Art Association, Lincoln's New Salem State |
15 | | Historic Site, and the Presbyterian Women of First Presbyterian |
16 | | Church of Champaign; her most important work was in support of |
17 | | mental illness research; inspired to honor the memory of her |
18 | | brother, she was a vigorous advocate and served on the board of |
19 | | directors of the Developmental Services Center in Champaign; |
20 | | she also volunteered with the National Alliance on Mental |
21 | | Illness (NAMI); one of her most notable legacies was to have |
22 | | been part of the initial collaboration between the First |

1 | | Presbyterian Church of Champaign and the Canaan Baptist Church |
2 | | in Urbana to start the annual Gospel Jazz Fest to benefit the |
3 | | Men and Women's SAFE House, a substance abuse rehabilitation |
4 | | center; she was a proud member of the Philanthropic Educational |
5 | | Organization (P.E.O.) Chapter MM; and
|
6 | | WHEREAS, Louise Turpin valued her family and friends; many |
7 | | memories are preserved because of her informal role as family |
8 | | photographer; she enjoyed accompanying her grandchildren on |
9 | | short trips and to local theater performances and watching |
10 | | Illini volleyball games; she will be remembered for her natural |
11 | | curiosity, her strong faith, and her gracious acceptance of |
12 | | others; and
|
13 | | WHEREAS, Louise Turpin was preceded in death by her |
14 | | parents; her brother, Joe VanMatre; and her sister, Nan Shafer; |
15 | | and
|
16 | | WHEREAS, Louise Turpin is survived by her husband, Jim; her |
17 | | children, Chris (Jim Lukeman), Dan (Suzanne Cross), and Jayne |
18 | | (Joe DeLuce); her grandchildren, Carly (Jason) Sakowski, |
19 | | Kendall (Evan) Williamson, Shayne, Quinn, Trey, Jenna, and |
20 | | Jordan; her great-grandson, Luka; her brother, Frank (Pat) |
21 | | VanMatre; and many nieces, nephews, and friends; therefore, be |

1 | | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL |
2 | | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of |
3 | | Louise Turpin and extend our sincere condolences to her family, |
4 | | friends, and all who knew and loved her; and be it further
|
5 | | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be |
6 | | presented to the family of Louise Turpin as an expression of |
7 | | our deepest sympathy.
