|
2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to |
3 | | learn of the death of Janet L. (Leff) Bernstein of Highland |
4 | | Park, who passed away on August 10, 2019; and
|
5 | | WHEREAS, Janet Bernstein moved to Highland Park in 1964 |
6 | | with her husband, Bob; she volunteered in her children's |
7 | | schools, where she brought the curriculum to life; when |
8 | | students studied China in their social studies unit, she cooked |
9 | | a Chinese feast with all of the delicacies of the Mandarin |
10 | | region; affectionately known as Mrs. B, she sewed costumes for |
11 | | school plays and taught students to quilt; as her children |
12 | | grew, she donated her time to Highland Park High School, where |
13 | | she helped to raise money for the Highland Park School Giants |
14 | | Club, formerly known as the Dad's Club, and supported her |
15 | | husband's presidency of the organization; she was a confidant, |
16 | | advisor and role model to many children in the community; and
|
17 | | WHEREAS, Janet Bernstein devoted much of her adult life to |
18 | | the advancement of charitable, community, and civic activities |
19 | | in Highland Park; she was a founding member of the Park |
20 | | District Senior Advising Committee and assisted with the |
21 | | establishment of the Stupey Log Cabin Museum and the Park |
22 | | District's Community Gardens; an active member of the Highland |
23 | | Park Senior Center, she advocated for senior services and |

1 | | programming; she was a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) |
2 | | volunteer and served on the District 113 caucus for many years; |
3 | | she served as a lead organizer of the Martin Luther King Day of |
4 | | Service, which grew from 150 to 1600 participants under her |
5 | | leadership; she served as Chairwoman of the City's Human |
6 | | Relations Commission; and
|
7 | | WHEREAS, Janet Bernstein received the 2019 City of Highland |
8 | | Park Humanitarian Award for her service to the Highland Park |
9 | | community and her selfless efforts and sustained giving, which |
10 | | made a significant contribution to changing lives in the |
11 | | community; her passion for service influenced many others to |
12 | | donate their time and energy to help make Highland Park a |
13 | | better place to live; she led by example and demonstrated the |
14 | | highest moral and ethical conduct; and
|
15 | | WHEREAS, Janet Bernstein was the beloved wife of the late |
16 | | Robert A. Bernstein and the late Marvin S. Levinson, the loving |
17 | | mother of Michael (Rebecca Miller) Bernstein, Cookie (Joel) |
18 | | Walner, Cal (Julie) Bernstein, Ron (Susan) Bernstein, Joni |
19 | | (Bruce) Friedman, and Sherri (Mitch) Padnos, the adored |
20 | | grandmother of Lauren, Mark, Marni (Chris), Amanda (Ryan), |
21 | | Joey, Molly, Jason, Nikki, David, Danny, Benji, Abby, Katie, |
22 | | and the late Kenny, the cherished great-grandmother of Jemma, |
23 | | Ian, Isaac, and Lincoln, the dear sister of Muriel (the late |
24 | | Sidney) Fohrman and Jewel (Sheldon) Schaps, and the treasured |

1 | | aunt, friend,and second mom to many; therefore, be it

2 | | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL |
3 | | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of |
4 | | Janet L. (Leff) Bernstein and extend our sincere condolences to |
5 | | her family, friends, and all who knew and loved her; and be it |
6 | | further

7 | | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be |
8 | | presented to the family of Janet Bernstein as an expression of |
9 | | our deepest sympathy.
