2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to |
3 | | learn of the death of Anna Wall Scott of Urbana, who passed |
4 | | away on June 8, 2019; and
|
5 | | WHEREAS, Anna Scott was known for her political and social |
6 | | accomplishments; she enlisted in the United States Army after |
7 | | graduating from high school and served during World War II as |
8 | | one of the first members of the Women's Army Corps; she earned |
9 | | three degrees from the University of Illinois; and
|
10 | | WHEREAS, Anna Scott taught sociology at Parkland College |
11 | | for over 40 years; and
|
12 | | WHEREAS, Anna Scott was the first woman in the State to be |
13 | | elected to the Democratic State Central Committee; she served |
14 | | as vice chairwoman of the State Democratic Party with the late |
15 | | Chicago Mayor Richard J. Daley and was a member of the |
16 | | Democratic National Committee, where she served as a delegate |
17 | | to the nominating convention that led to the election of |
18 | | President Jimmy Carter; later in her public career, she |
19 | | switched to the Republican Party; and

20 | | WHEREAS, Anna Scott was active in her community and a |
21 | | strong voice at Bethel AME Church; she desegregated the |
