|
2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to |
3 | | learn of the death of Dr. Shobha Deven Parikh of Chicago, who |
4 | | passed away on June 2, 2018; and
|
5 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Parikh was born to Kanaiyalal and Kapilaben |
6 | | Shah on November 27, 1944; from an early age, she knew she |
7 | | wanted to help people; she was accepted into a medical school |
8 | | where English was spoken and learned both English and medicine |
9 | | simultaneously; and
|
10 | | WHEREAS, As an Emergency Room and Family Physician, Dr. |
11 | | Parikh worked for many hospitals around Chicago, including Mt. |
12 | | Sinai Hospital, Mercy Hospital, Ravenswood Hospital, Swedish |
13 | | Covenant Hospital, and Christ Memorial Hospital; she became one |
14 | | of the first female Indian doctors on Devon Avenue when she |
15 | | opened a clinic in 1981; she cared for more than 150,000 |
16 | | patients during her 37-year career and treated the Indian |
17 | | community like they were a part of her family; and
|
18 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Parikh hosted hundreds of spiritual events for |
19 | | the Indian community, was a member of cultural organizations, |
20 | | including Gujarati Samaj and Swadhyay, supported area senior |
21 | | centers, and generously donated to charity; she also worked |
22 | | extra jobs to bring her siblings and parents to America; she |

1 | | enjoyed drawing and cooking and was a fan of Julia Roberts; her |
2 | | greatest joy was her family, whom she served with love and |
3 | | care; she especially enjoyed spending time with her |
4 | | grandchildren; and
|
5 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Parikh's loved ones have established a |
6 | | not-for-profit organization in Illinois, The Shobha |
7 | | Foundation, to honor her legacy in support of cancer research, |
8 | | women's rights, and education in the United States and abroad; |
9 | | and
|
10 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Parikh was preceded in death by her parents; |
11 | | and
|
12 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Parikh is survived by her husband of 46 years, |
13 | | Deven Parikh; her children, Parul Cheriyan, Dr. Rupak Parikh, |
14 | | Parag Parikh, and Dr. Roshan Shah; her grandchildren, Riya and |
15 | | Sarina Cheriyan; her mother-in-law, Dhangauriben Parikh; her |
16 | | son-in-law, Thomas Cheriyan; her daughter-in-law, Nancy To; |
17 | | her siblings, Prabodh Shah, Dilip Shah, Dr. Pankaj Shah, and |
18 | | Nikunj Talati; her brother-in-law, Dr. Kiran Talati; her |
19 | | sisters-in-law, Bharati P. Shah, Hemangini Shah, and Jagruti |
20 | | Shah; and her extended family and friends; therefore, be it
