SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Carrie Mae (Deering) Coleman, who passed
4away on March 1, 2019; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Carrie Coleman was born in Pickens, Mississippi to
6Willie C. Gibson and Lillie E. Deering on August 15, 1950; she
7was raised by her grandparents, Reverend Amos and Evelyne
8Deering; she committed to her faith at an early age at Holy
9City Baptist Church, where she discovered her talent for
10singing; she sang throughout her hometown, which led to a full
11scholarship to Mississippi Industrial College in Holly
12Springs, Mississippi, where she majored in music and minored in
13education; she graduated with a bachelor's degree in elementary
14education; she married Lee Willie Coleman on August 1, 1970,
15and they moved from Mississippi to Joliet; she continued her
16education at Governors State University and earned a graduate
17certificate in public administration; she then earned a
18graduate certificate in curriculum and instruction from
19National Lewis University; and
 
20    WHEREAS, Carrie Coleman was employed by many educational
21institutions in Joliet, including the Joliet Job Corps Center,
22Joliet Junior College, Washington Junior High, and Fairmont
23Junior High; she also worked as a personal tutor and was a

1licensed grant writer; and
 
2    WHEREAS, After moving to Joliet, Carrie Coleman and her
3husband joined Mount Zion Baptist Church, and she sang in the
4Mt. Zion Voices of Zion and taught Sunday School for over 20
5years; her commitment to her faith continued to grow, and she
6became an ordained minister in 2008; she was a stranger to no
7one and will be remembered for her dedication to her work; and
 
8    WHEREAS, Carrie Coleman was preceded in death by her
9parents; her grandparents; her brother, Richard Spurlock; and
10her brothers-in-law, Floyd L. Coleman and Jessie E. Coleman;
11and
 
12    WHEREAS, Carrie Coleman is survived by her husband, Lee;
13her children, Nicholas T. (Tiana) Coleman Sr., Nicol Y.
14Coleman, and Natalie A. Coleman; her grandchildren, Jaylin
15Coleman, Nicholas Coleman Jr., Malik Coleman, Jurnee Coleman,
16and Tamia Coleman; her godchildren, Darren Ulmer, the late Dr.
17Timmothy Bailey, Kyle Pierce, and Syretta Edwards; her
18siblings, Lonnie B. Spurlock, Nathaniel Spurlock, George
19Spurlock, Faye L. Spurlock, and Francis Spurlock Andrews; her
20brother-in-law, Eric J. (Delois) Coleman; her sisters-in-law,
21Earnestine Coleman Mayo, Bertha R. (Michael) Hudson, Elois
22(Keith) Goss, and Madeline C. Coleman; and her many other
23family members and friends; therefore, be it

1    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL
2ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
3Carrie Mae (Deering) Coleman and extend our sincere condolences
4to her family, friends, and all who knew and loved her; and be
5it further
 
6    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
7presented to the family of Carrie Coleman as an expression of
8our deepest sympathy.
