2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to |
3 | | learn of the death of Carrie Mae (Deering) Coleman, who passed |
4 | | away on March 1, 2019; and
|
5 | | WHEREAS, Carrie Coleman was born in Pickens, Mississippi to |
6 | | Willie C. Gibson and Lillie E. Deering on August 15, 1950; she |
7 | | was raised by her grandparents, Reverend Amos and Evelyne |
8 | | Deering; she committed to her faith at an early age at Holy |
9 | | City Baptist Church, where she discovered her talent for |
10 | | singing; she sang throughout her hometown, which led to a full |
11 | | scholarship to Mississippi Industrial College in Holly |
12 | | Springs, Mississippi, where she majored in music and minored in |
13 | | education; she graduated with a bachelor's degree in elementary |
14 | | education; she married Lee Willie Coleman on August 1, 1970, |
15 | | and they moved from Mississippi to Joliet; she continued her |
16 | | education at Governors State University and earned a graduate |
17 | | certificate in public administration; she then earned a |
18 | | graduate certificate in curriculum and instruction from |
19 | | National Lewis University; and
|
20 | | WHEREAS, Carrie Coleman was employed by many educational |
21 | | institutions in Joliet, including the Joliet Job Corps Center, |
22 | | Joliet Junior College, Washington Junior High, and Fairmont |
23 | | Junior High; she also worked as a personal tutor and was a |
|

1 | | licensed grant writer; and
|
2 | | WHEREAS, After moving to Joliet, Carrie Coleman and her |
3 | | husband joined Mount Zion Baptist Church, and she sang in the |
4 | | Mt. Zion Voices of Zion and taught Sunday School for over 20 |
5 | | years; her commitment to her faith continued to grow, and she |
6 | | became an ordained minister in 2008; she was a stranger to no |
7 | | one and will be remembered for her dedication to her work; and
|
8 | | WHEREAS, Carrie Coleman was preceded in death by her |
9 | | parents; her grandparents; her brother, Richard Spurlock; and |
10 | | her brothers-in-law, Floyd L. Coleman and Jessie E. Coleman; |
11 | | and
|
12 | | WHEREAS, Carrie Coleman is survived by her husband, Lee; |
13 | | her children, Nicholas T. (Tiana) Coleman Sr., Nicol Y. |
14 | | Coleman, and Natalie A. Coleman; her grandchildren, Jaylin |
15 | | Coleman, Nicholas Coleman Jr., Malik Coleman, Jurnee Coleman, |
16 | | and Tamia Coleman; her godchildren, Darren Ulmer, the late Dr. |
17 | | Timmothy Bailey, Kyle Pierce, and Syretta Edwards; her |
18 | | siblings, Lonnie B. Spurlock, Nathaniel Spurlock, George |
19 | | Spurlock, Faye L. Spurlock, and Francis Spurlock Andrews; her |
20 | | brother-in-law, Eric J. (Delois) Coleman; her sisters-in-law, |
21 | | Earnestine Coleman Mayo, Bertha R. (Michael) Hudson, Elois |
22 | | (Keith) Goss, and Madeline C. Coleman; and her many other |
23 | | family members and friends; therefore, be it

1 | | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL |
2 | | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of |
3 | | Carrie Mae (Deering) Coleman and extend our sincere condolences |
4 | | to her family, friends, and all who knew and loved her; and be |
5 | | it further

6 | | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be |
7 | | presented to the family of Carrie Coleman as an expression of |
8 | | our deepest sympathy.
