SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Harry Miller Stern of Bloomington, who
4passed away on January 31, 2019; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Harry Stern was born in Normal to David and
6Gertrude Miller Stern on May 14, 1940; he graduated from
7Washington School and Bloomington High School; he attended the
8University of Illinois for a year and then transferred to the
9University of Arizona, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in
10Business; he was also a member of Zeta Beta Tau fraternity; he
11married Marlys Immke in Springfield on August 28, 1970; and
 
12    WHEREAS, Harry Stern helped manage the family furniture
13store and worked in partnership with his father and two uncles;
14the Stern family operated their furniture business on Main
15Street and, later, on Veterans Parkway, for more than 80 years;
16and
 
17    WHEREAS, Harry Stern served as treasurer and as a board
18member of Moses Montefiore Temple for 15 years; he was a member
19of the Senior Professionals at Illinois State University, the
20TOC Club, and the United States Army Reserves; he served on the
21boards of Bloomington's Miller Park Zoo and the Illinois
22Symphony Orchestra; he also served as a member of the national

1board of directors of the Eiteljorg Museum of Native Americans
2in Indianapolis, Indiana; he was a supporter of the arts at the
3Krannert Center at the University of Illinois; and
 
4    WHEREAS, Harry Stern was an admirer of the arts, especially
5Native American Art; he and his wife traveled to the southwest
6often; he also enjoyed swimming and sailing and playing tennis
7and golf; and
 
8    WHEREAS, Harry Stern is survived by his wife, Marlys; his
9sons, Andrew and Philip; his daughters-in-law, Brenda and
10Carolyn; his grandchildren, Hazel, Sam, and Silas; his sisters,
11Sybil Stern Mervis and former Mayor Judy Stern Markowitz;
12therefore, be it
 
13    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL
14ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
15Harry Miller Stern and extend our sincere condolences to his
16family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it
17further
 
18    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
19presented to the family of Harry Stern as an expression of our
20deepest sympathy.
