SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to learn of the death of Harry Miller Stern of Bloomington, who passed away on January 31, 2019; and

WHEREAS, Harry Stern was born in Normal to David and Gertrude Miller Stern on May 14, 1940; he graduated from Washington School and Bloomington High School; he attended the University of Illinois for a year and then transferred to the University of Arizona, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Business; he was also a member of Zeta Beta Tau fraternity; he married Marlys Immke in Springfield on August 28, 1970; and

WHEREAS, Harry Stern helped manage the family furniture store and worked in partnership with his father and two uncles; the Stern family operated their furniture business on Main Street and, later, on Veterans Parkway, for more than 80 years; and

WHEREAS, Harry Stern served as treasurer and as a board member of Moses Montefiore Temple for 15 years; he was a member of the Senior Professionals at Illinois State University, the TOC Club, and the United States Army Reserves; he served on the boards of Bloomington's Miller Park Zoo and the Illinois Symphony Orchestra; he also served as a member of the national board of directors of the Eiteljorg Museum of Native Americans in Indianapolis, Indiana; he was a supporter of the arts at the Krannert Center at the University of Illinois; and

WHEREAS, Harry Stern was an admirer of the arts, especially Native American Art; he and his wife traveled to the southwest often; he also enjoyed swimming and sailing and playing tennis and golf; and

WHEREAS, Harry Stern is survived by his wife, Marlys; his sons, Andrew and Philip; his daughters-in-law, Brenda and Carolyn; his grandchildren, Hazel, Sam, and Silas; his sisters, Sybil Stern Mervis and former Mayor Judy Stern Markowitz; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of Harry Miller Stern and extend our sincere condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Harry Stern as an expression of our deepest sympathy.
