1 | SENATE RESOLUTION
| ||||||
2 | WHEREAS, Burn injuries continue to be one of the leading | ||||||
3 | causes of accidental death and injury in our nation; | ||||||
4 | tragically, children, the elderly, and the disabled are | ||||||
5 | especially vulnerable to burn injuries, and almost one-third of | ||||||
6 | all burn injuries occur in children under the age of 15; and
| ||||||
7 | WHEREAS, Annually, in the United States, approximately | ||||||
8 | 486,000 people receive medical care for treatment of burn | ||||||
9 | injuries; in 2016 alone, there were 3,280 deaths from fire and | ||||||
10 | smoke inhalation, and another 40,000 people were treated in | ||||||
11 | hospitals for burn related injuries; and
| ||||||
12 | WHEREAS, Children under five are 2.4 times as likely as the | ||||||
13 | general population to suffer burn injuries that require | ||||||
14 | emergency medical treatment, and young adults ages 20-29 have a | ||||||
15 | probability of burn injury that is roughly 1.5 times the risk | ||||||
16 | of the general population; and | ||||||
17 | WHEREAS, The primary causes of injury include fire-flame, | ||||||
18 | scalds, electrical, and chemicals; most of the injuries occur | ||||||
19 | in the home; today, 96.8% of those who suffer burn injuries | ||||||
20 | will survive; unfortunately, many of those survivors will | ||||||
21 | sustain serious scarring, life-long physical disabilities, and | ||||||
22 | adjustment difficulties; and

1 | WHEREAS, National Burn Awareness Week, an initiative of the | ||||||
2 | American Burn Association, is a coming together of burn, fire, | ||||||
3 | and life safety educators to make the public aware of the | ||||||
4 | frequency, devastation, and causes of burn injury, to offer | ||||||
5 | consistent and authoritative measures to prevent these | ||||||
6 | injuries, and to detail how to best care for those that are | ||||||
7 | injured; and
| ||||||
8 | WHEREAS, Significant research and medical advances have | ||||||
9 | dramatically improved burn care and treatment, aided | ||||||
10 | rehabilitation, shortened hospital stays, and increased burn | ||||||
11 | survival rates; aftercare support for the physical and | ||||||
12 | emotional effects of burns has also played a key role in the | ||||||
13 | successful reintegration of burn survivors into our | ||||||
14 | communities; furthermore, burn safety education and prevention | ||||||
15 | efforts continue to reduce the number of people who suffer | ||||||
16 | burns each year; and
| ||||||
17 | WHEREAS, Many people devote their lives and careers to | ||||||
18 | treating, caring for, supporting, and rehabilitating burn | ||||||
19 | injury survivors, including those performing vital work in burn | ||||||
20 | research and development; there are dedicated fire fighters who | ||||||
21 | risk their own lives every day to protect others, as well as | ||||||
22 | burn foundations and other life safety professionals who | ||||||
23 | promote burn injury awareness and prevention; therefore, be it

1 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL | ||||||
2 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we declare February | ||||||
3 | 3-9, 2019 as Burn Awareness Week in the State of Illinois; and | ||||||
4 | be it further
| ||||||
5 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
6 | presented to the American Burn Association as a symbol of our | ||||||
7 | respect and esteem.
