SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Dr. James Joseph Schuler, who passed away
4on January 20, 2019; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Dr. Schuler was born to John and Ella Schuler on
6March 12, 1946 and spent his early years growing up in Batavia;
7he received his Bachelor of Science from St. John's University,
8his Doctor of Medicine from the University of Illinois at
9Chicago (UIC) College of Medicine, and his Master of Science
10from the UIC College of Graduate Medical Education; his medical
11internship, residency, chief residency, and fellowship
12training were all completed at UIC and VA Hospitals; and
 
13    WHEREAS, Dr. Schuler's contributions to the medical field
14and professional accomplishments were extensive; during his 40
15years at the University of Illinois Hospital, he was a
16life-long supporter of the hospital; he rose through the ranks
17to become Division Chief of Vascular Surgery at the UIC; he was
18instrumental in setting up the Vascular Laboratory at the
19hospital and providing academic structure to the recently
20formed division; he was a marvelous doctor and a great teacher,
21treasured by his peers, his surgical residents, and his medical
22students; and

1    WHEREAS, Dr. Schuler was a true outdoorsman; he spent his
2leisure time hunting and fishing with his family and friends;
3in his later years, he loved his Colorado ranch where he and
4Catherine lived for 14 years; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Dr. Schuler was married to Catherine Jean Schuler
6for nearly 50 years; and
 
7    WHEREAS, Dr. Schuler is survived by his sons, James Patrick
8and Matthew John, and their wives, Maureen and Kelley; his
9grandchildren, Jack, Claire, and Austin; his brother, Jack
10(Sarah) Schuler; his sister, Jane (Paul) Steingraeber; and many
11nieces and nephews; therefore, be it
 
12    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL
13ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
14Dr. James Joseph Schuler and extend our sincere condolences to
15his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it
16further
 
17    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
18presented to the family of Dr. Schuler as an expression of our
19deepest sympathy.
