2 | | WHEREAS, The executive board of the World Health |
3 | | Organization designated the year
2020 as "Year of the Nurse and |
4 | | Midwife" in conjunction with the 200th birthday of
Florence |
5 | | Nightingale; and
|
6 | | WHEREAS, The World Health Organization is urging world |
7 | | leaders to make investments in
nursing and to pave the way for |
8 | | a brighter future for health around the world; and
|
9 | | WHEREAS, Nurses and nurse midwives have a critical role in |
10 | | health promotion, disease
prevention, and the delivery of care |
11 | | in all settings; and
|
12 | | WHEREAS, Illinois has 185,992 registered nurses living and |
13 | | working in the State, of
which 13,746 are also licensed as |
14 | | advanced practice registered nurses, and 24,763
licensed |
15 | | practical nurses, making nursing the largest licensed health |
16 | | care profession; and |
17 | | WHEREAS, There are over 525 active certified |
18 | | nurse-midwives (CNMs) licensed
through the Illinois State |
19 | | Board of Nursing; and |
20 | | WHEREAS, There are 129 schools of nursing in Illinois; and |

1 | | WHEREAS, The care provided by nurses in Illinois is the |
2 | | primary component to a
successful health care delivery system; |
3 | | and
|
4 | | WHEREAS, Since 2015, nurse researchers in Illinois have |
5 | | been awarded funding from the
National Institute of Nursing |
6 | | Research in excess of $27 million, to provide the |
7 | | evidence-based
findings to improve health for individuals, |
8 | | families, and communities; and
|
9 | | WHEREAS, CNMs are primary care providers throughout a |
10 | | woman's life span,
promoting the health and well-being of |
11 | | newborns and women, and care for families and
communities |
12 | | during a time of an obstetric workforce shortage in the |
13 | | country; therefore, be it
|
14 | | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL |
15 | | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES |
16 | | CONCURRING HEREIN, that we declare 2020 as the "Year of the |
17 | | Nurse and Midwife" in the State of Illinois; and be it further

18 | | RESOLVED, That we recognize the vital role of
nurses and |
19 | | nurse midwives in promoting and providing health care to the |
20 | | residents of
Illinois and the importance of investment in |
21 | | nursing education and research to develop a
