SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, It is highly fitting that the Illinois General
3Assembly pays honor and respect to those individuals who have
4served our country and, in doing so, have made the ultimate
5sacrifice for our nation; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Ronald E. Powers was born on June 12, 1948 and was
7raised in Macoupin County; and
 
8    WHEREAS, Ronald Powers joined the United States Army and
9served as a Private First Class with the 9th Infantry Division,
101st Battalion, 16th Infantry, Combat Support Company; and
 
11    WHEREAS, PFC Powers began his tour of duty in South Vietnam
12on September 5, 1968; and
 
13    WHEREAS, On October 4, 1968, PFC Powers was killed in
14action while serving in the Dinh Tuong Province in South
15Vietnam; and
 
16    WHEREAS, PFC Powers was awarded the Purple Heart, the
17Bronze Star, the National Defense Medal, the Vietnam Service
18Medal, and the Vietnam Campaign Medal; his name can be found on
19the Vietnam Veterans Memorial on Panel 41w, line 7; therefore,

1    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL
2ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES
3CONCURRING HEREIN, that we designate Illinois Route 16 from its
4intersection with Illinois Route 111 to its intersection with
5US Route 67 as the "PFC Ronald E. Powers Memorial Highway"; and
6be it further
 
7    RESOLVED, That the Illinois Department of Transportation
8is requested to erect at suitable locations, consistent with
9State and federal regulations, appropriate plaques or signs
10giving notice of the name "PFC Ronald E. Powers Memorial
11Highway"; and be it further
 
12    RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be
13presented to the family of PFC Powers and the Secretary of the
14Illinois Department of Transportation.
