2 | WHEREAS, It is important to remember and honor the service | ||||||
3 | of those who gave the ultimate sacrifice in the defense of the | ||||||
4 | United States of America; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, It is long overdue that we recognize the | ||||||
6 | sacrifices of those who served and died in the Vietnam War; and
| ||||||
7 | WHEREAS, Glenard Jay Gregory was born in Bethalto to J.W. | ||||||
8 | and Velda Lorene (Manahan) Gregory on February 27, 1949; and
| ||||||
9 | WHEREAS, Glenard Jay Gregory moved with his family to | ||||||
10 | Shipman when he was very young; he attended Shipman Grade | ||||||
11 | School and then Southwestern Junior and Senior High School; and | ||||||
12 | WHEREAS, Glenard Jay Gregory enlisted in the United States | ||||||
13 | Army on November 28, 1967, serving as a Field Artillery Basic | ||||||
14 | with Battery A of the 1st Battalion, 27th Artillery, 23rd | ||||||
15 | Artillery Group, II Field Force; and
| ||||||
16 | WHEREAS, Sgt. Gregory started his tour of Vietnam on May 6, | ||||||
17 | 1968; he was injured on April 19, 1969 while assisting other | ||||||
18 | members of his sector when an enemy rocket impacted next to his | ||||||
19 | cannon; he passed away on April 20, 1969, tragically dying at | ||||||
20 | the age of 20, just days before he was scheduled to return |

1 | home; and
| ||||||
2 | WHEREAS, Sgt. Gregory was awarded the Vietnam Campaign | ||||||
3 | Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, the National Defense Medal, | ||||||
4 | the Purple Heart Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, the Expert | ||||||
5 | Sharpshooter Medal, and the Bronze Star with "V" Decoration; | ||||||
6 | and
| ||||||
7 | WHEREAS, Sgt. Gregory is buried in the Shipman Cemetery in | ||||||
8 | Macoupin County; and
| ||||||
9 | WHEREAS, Sgt. Gregory is honored on Panel 26w, Line 15 of | ||||||
10 | the Vietnam Memorial Wall in Washington, D.C.; therefore, be it
| ||||||
11 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL | ||||||
12 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES | ||||||
13 | CONCURRING HEREIN, that we designate Route 16 in Shipman to the | ||||||
14 | Southwestern Junction (Route 16 & Route 111) as the "Sgt. | ||||||
15 | Glenard Jay Gregory Memorial Road"; and be it further
| ||||||
16 | RESOLVED, That the Illinois Department of Transportation | ||||||
17 | is requested to erect at suitable locations, consistent with | ||||||
18 | State and federal regulations, appropriate plaques or signs | ||||||
19 | giving notice of the name "Sgt. Glenard Jay Memorial Road"; and | ||||||
20 | be it further

2 | presented to the family of Sgt. Glenard Jay Gregory, the | ||||||
3 | Village of Shipman, and the Secretary of Transportation.
