HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives wish to commend Thomas Butler on a lifetime of
4service; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Thomas Butler was born in Philadelphia,
6Pennsylvania on December 17, 1964; in 1983, he graduated from
7Barrington High School and enlisted in the U. S. Marine Corps;
8following the footsteps of his father James Butler, he served
9as a proud U.S. Marine and was in one of the first units to land
10in Saudi Arabia for Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm; while
11serving in the Marines, he obtained his associate's degree in
12political science; he was honorably discharged in 1993; and
 
13    WHEREAS, Thomas Butler began working for a hotel and casino
14chain as a security officer; in 1994, he attended the ALETA
15Police Academy in Tucson, Arizona and served in law enforcement
16for approximately seven years in Mohave County, Arizona; and
 
17    WHEREAS, Thomas Butler and his family moved to Idaho, and
18he began working for the sheriff's department in Gem County,
19Idaho; he also started working for the Albertson's grocery
20chain, where he became a manager; and
 
21    WHEREAS, Thomas Butler joined the Idaho National Guard

1after the attacks on September 11, 2001 so that he could once
2again serve his country; he was deployed to Iraq, where he was
3wounded by an improvised explosive device (IED) while on a foot
4patrol in Kirkuk; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Thomas Butler recovered and obtained his Bachelor
6of Science in Business Administration and Management; he become
7a recruiter for the Army National Guard; and
 
8    WHEREAS, Thomas Butler has received a number of awards and
9citations during his military career, including the Purple
10Heart (Army Service), the Idaho Cross (Army Service), the Army
11Commendation Medal (Army Service), the Combat Action Badge
12(Army Service), the Navy Achievement Medal (Marine Corps
13Service), the Meritorious Unit Commendation Medal (Army
14Service), the Meritorious Unit Commendation Medal (Marine
15Corps Service), two Navy Unit Commendation Medals (Marine Corps
16Service), the Combat Action Ribbon (Marines Corps Service),
17four Southwest Asia Service Ribbons (Marine Corps Service and
18Army Service), the Kuwaiti Liberation Medal awarded by Saudi
19Arabia (Marine Corps Service), the Kuwaiti Liberation Medal
20awarded by Kuwait (Marine Corps Service), three Marine Good
21Conduct Medals, five Army Good Conduct Medals, three Marine
22Overseas Service Deployment Ribbons, the Army Overseas Service
23Ribbon, the Volunteer Community Service Medal (Idaho Army
24National Guard Service), two National Defense Medals (Marine

1Corps and Army Service), the Iraqi Campaign Medal (Army
2Service), the Global War Terrorism Medal (Army Service), the
3Army Reserve Component Achievement Medal, the Armed Forces
4Expeditionary Medal (Army Service), the Army Overseas Service
5Ribbon, the Armed Forces Reserve Medal (Army Service), the
6Idaho Service Ribbon (Idaho Army National Guard Service), three
7Idaho Reenlistment Ribbons (Idaho Army National Guard), two
8Basic and Advanced Leadership Ribbons (Idaho Army National
9Guard), 12 Expert Rifle Badges, 15 Expert Pistol Badges, and
10the Basic, Senior, and Master Badges in Recruiting and
11Retention; and
 
12    WHEREAS, Thomas Butler resides in Emmett, Idaho with his
13wife; they have six children, and serving their country has
14become a family affair; five out of his six children are in the
15National Guard; therefore, be it
 
16    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
17HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
18we commend Thomas Butler on a lifetime of service; and be it
19further
 
20    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
21presented to Thomas Butler as a symbol of our respect and
22esteem.
