| ||||||
2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of | ||||||
3 | Representatives wish to congratulate the Elgin Public Museum of | ||||||
4 | Natural History and Anthropology on the occasion of its 100th | ||||||
5 | anniversary on November 12, 2020; and
| ||||||
6 | WHEREAS, The mission of the Elgin Public Museum, a | ||||||
7 | registered 501(c)3 non-profit corporation, is to enhance the | ||||||
8 | knowledge of the natural sciences and anthropology through the | ||||||
9 | use of exhibits and interactive experiences; and
| ||||||
10 | WHEREAS, The purpose of the Elgin Public Museum is to | ||||||
11 | promote a comprehension and appreciation of both the natural | ||||||
12 | world and other cultures, both past and present, and to | ||||||
13 | increase awareness of the consequences of the decisions human | ||||||
14 | cultures have made through time; and
| ||||||
15 | WHEREAS, The Elgin Public Museum offers exhibits and | ||||||
16 | educational programs with natural history and cultural themes | ||||||
17 | for families, school groups, Scouts, clubs, organizations, | ||||||
18 | homeschoolers, and anyone who wants to have fun while learning; | ||||||
19 | and
| ||||||
20 | WHEREAS, The Elgin Public Museum is situated within Lords | ||||||
21 | Park, located on Elgin's east side, and is the only natural |

| |||||||
1 | history museum in the Fox Valley area; its building was | ||||||
2 | designed by noted architect David Postle in 1904; and
| ||||||
3 | WHEREAS, During the Depression Era, the Elgin Public Museum | ||||||
4 | served the community by providing a low cost way for visitors | ||||||
5 | to forget the difficulties many were facing at the time; as a | ||||||
6 | result, attendance remained high during this period; and
| ||||||
7 | WHEREAS, The Elgin Public Museum continued to serve the | ||||||
8 | community and made history in 1996 when, under the leadership | ||||||
9 | of Director Nancy Epping, it began the process of complying | ||||||
10 | with the recently-passed Americans with Disabilities Act to | ||||||
11 | offer greater accessibility; and
| ||||||
12 | WHEREAS, Recently, the Elgin Public Museum has experienced | ||||||
13 | a decrease in funding due to fallout from the Great Recession; | ||||||
14 | despite this, it had an excellent year in 2019 and made great | ||||||
15 | contributions to local education and tourism, which included | ||||||
16 | 130 school programs, Scout programs, and special events; and
| ||||||
17 | WHEREAS, Since the COVID-19 outbreak, the Elgin Public | ||||||
18 | Museum has strongly enforced mandatory masks and occupancy | ||||||
19 | limits, so it can continue to provide crucial entertainment and | ||||||
20 | distraction to the community, not unlike it did years ago | ||||||
21 | during the Great Depression; therefore, be it

1 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE | ||||||
2 | HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that | ||||||
3 | we congratulate the Elgin Public Museum of Natural History and | ||||||
4 | Anthropology on its 100th anniversary and commend it for | ||||||
5 | continuing to play such an important role in the Elgin | ||||||
6 | community; and be it further
| ||||||
7 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
8 | presented to the members of the Elgin Public Museum of Natural | ||||||
9 | History and Anthropology Board as an expression of our esteem | ||||||
10 | and respect.
