HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Michael R. "Mike" Manno of Lansing, who passed away on June 21, 2020; and

WHEREAS, Mike Manno was born on April 21, 1952; and

WHEREAS, Mike Manno served as a police officer for the city of Lansing from 1978 until his retirement in 2002; he continued to teach anti-gang and safety programs to the youth of Lansing while driving his G.R.E.A.T. van around town; in 2001, he was recognized for his service and named the Midwest G.R.E.A.T. Officer of the Year by the Department of Justice; during his tenure with the department, he was a member of the police and fire safety team (Big Bird) and trained as a hostage negotiator; he initiated the Senior Citizen Academy and was involved with the D.A.R.E. program; he loved his assignment as a motorcycle officer and worked as a community liaison for the latter half of his career; he was affectionately known as "Officer Friendly"; serving and protecting others was his passion; and

WHEREAS, Mike Manno became a trustee for the Village of Lansing in 2013; a Lansing resident for almost 60 years, he worked every day to make the city a better place; and

WHEREAS, Mike Manno worked as a security guard at Community Hospital in Munster, Indiana for the last five years and was planning on retiring in June; and

WHEREAS, Mike Manno served on the board of School District 171 and on the board of directors for the LACE organization; he was a founding member of the Lansing Volunteer Recognition Committee and presided over the T.F.S Booster Club and the Lansing Lions Football organization; he coached for over 25 years with the Lansing Old Timers girls softball and volleyball leagues and was chairman of the Marian Catholic fundraising committee; and

WHEREAS, Mike Manno was the first male to win the prestigious Athena Award in 2018; the award, presented by the Lansing Regional Chamber of Commerce, honors women and men who strive towards the highest levels of professional accomplishment, who excel in their chosen field, who have devoted time and energy to their community, and who pave paths for women; and

WHEREAS, Mike Manno was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and uncle; he loved nothing more than being with his family, making them laugh and cheering them on in all aspects of their lives; his lengthy stories, exuberant displays of team spirit, and vibrant personality made him the life of the party; he was a man of true loyalty, passion, and integrity and worked tirelessly as a police officer; he cared deeply for his loved ones and devoted countless hours in service to his community; and

WHEREAS, Mike Manno was preceded in death by his mother, Ellen (Edward "Mac") McLaughlin; his brother, Richard "Richie" Manno; his father, Frank Manno; and his stepfather, Michael Nudo; and

WHEREAS, Mike Manno is survived by his wife of 45 years, Kathleen (Keller); his daughters, Dana (Craig) Parkhill, Renee Manno, and Nikki Manno (Cole Wagner); his granddaughter, Harper Parkhill; his sister, Sue Wayne; his mother-in-law, Marie (Robert) Keller; his sister-in-law, Rita (Jay) Vanderby; his brother-in-law, Timothy Keller; his nieces, Dawn (Greg) Pickar, Miranda Manno, Dakota Pickar, Allison Vanderby (Mike VanMilligan), and Kristin Vanderby (Nick Blannin); and his great-nephews, Ambrose and Keller Blannin; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of Michael R. "Mike" Manno and extend our sincere condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Mike Manno as an expression of our deepest sympathy.
