HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Michael
4R. "Mike" Manno of Lansing, who passed away on June 21, 2020;
5and
 
6    WHEREAS, Mike Manno was born on April 21, 1952; and
 
7    WHEREAS, Mike Manno served as a police officer for the city
8of Lansing from 1978 until his retirement in 2002; he continued
9to teach anti-gang and safety programs to the youth of Lansing
10while driving his G.R.E.A.T. van around town; in 2001, he was
11recognized for his service and named the Midwest G.R.E.A.T.
12Officer of the Year by the Department of Justice; during his
13tenure with the department, he was a member of the police and
14fire safety team (Big Bird) and trained as a hostage
15negotiator; he initiated the Senior Citizen Academy and was
16involved with the D.A.R.E. program; he loved his assignment as
17a motorcycle officer and worked as a community liaison for the
18latter half of his career; he was affectionately known as
19"Officer Friendly"; serving and protecting others was his
20passion; and
 
21    WHEREAS, Mike Manno became a trustee for the Village of
22Lansing in 2013; a Lansing resident for almost 60 years, he

1worked every day to make the city a better place; and
 
2    WHEREAS, Mike Manno worked as a security guard at Community
3Hospital in Munster, Indiana for the last five years and was
4planning on retiring in June; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Mike Manno served on the board of School District
6171 and on the board of directors for the LACE organization; he
7was a founding member of the Lansing Volunteer Recognition
8Committee and presided over the T.F.S Booster Club and the
9Lansing Lions Football organization; he coached for over 25
10years with the Lansing Old Timers girls softball and volleyball
11leagues and was chairman of the Marian Catholic fundraising
12committee; and
 
13    WHEREAS, Mike Manno was the first male to win the
14prestigious Athena Award in 2018; the award, presented by the
15Lansing Regional Chamber of Commerce, honors women and men who
16strive towards the highest levels of professional
17accomplishment, who excel in their chosen field, who have
18devoted time and energy to their community, and who pave paths
19for women; and
 
20    WHEREAS, Mike Manno was a devoted husband, father,
21grandfather, and uncle; he loved nothing more than being with
22his family, making them laugh and cheering them on in all

1aspects of their lives; his lengthy stories, exuberant displays
2of team spirit, and vibrant personality made him the life of
3the party; he was a man of true loyalty, passion, and integrity
4and worked tirelessly as a police officer; he cared deeply for
5his loved ones and devoted countless hours in service to his
6community; and
 
7    WHEREAS, Mike Manno was preceded in death by his mother,
8Ellen (Edward "Mac") McLaughlin; his brother, Richard "Richie"
9Manno; his father, Frank Manno; and his stepfather, Michael
10Nudo; and
 
11    WHEREAS, Mike Manno is survived by his wife of 45 years,
12Kathleen (Keller); his daughters, Dana (Craig) Parkhill, Renee
13Manno, and Nikki Manno (Cole Wagner); his granddaughter, Harper
14Parkhill; his sister, Sue Wayne; his mother-in-law, Marie
15(Robert) Keller; his sister-in-law, Rita (Jay) Vanderby; his
16brother-in-law, Timothy Keller; his nieces, Dawn (Greg)
17Pickar, Miranda Manno, Dakota Pickar, Allison Vanderby (Mike
18VanMilligan), and Kristin Vanderby (Nick Blannin); and his
19great-nephews, Ambrose and Keller Blannin; therefore, be it
 
20    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
21HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
22we mourn the passing of Michael R. "Mike" Manno and extend our
23sincere condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew

2    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
3presented to the family of Mike Manno as an expression of our
4deepest sympathy.
