2 | | WHEREAS, The Glendale Heights Mayor's Center for Senior |
3 | | Citizens Volunteer Initiative Program is a volunteer program |
4 | | based around the Center for Senior Citizens in Glendale |
5 | | Heights; and
|
6 | | WHEREAS, The Center for Senior Citizens offers |
7 | | comprehensive senior citizen resources, innovated programing, |
8 | | informational sessions, social events, and exciting trips; the |
9 | | Center includes a game room, fitness room, arts and crafts |
10 | | room, a full service salon, and a library with four computer |
11 | | stations with internet access; the Center currently has just |
12 | | under 2,000 members; and
|
13 | | WHEREAS, Volunteerism is an important part of The Center; |
14 | | this volunteerism is overseen by the Senior Citizens Volunteer |
15 | | Advisory Committee; the Committee typically meets every month |
16 | | to discuss how the Center and the Village of Glendale Heights |
17 | | can continue to provide support and resources for the Senior |
18 | | Community; and
|
19 | | WHEREAS, In 2018, the Senior Citizens Advisory Committee |
20 | | organized events such as bake sales and lunch-n-learns that |
21 | | included lessons on healthy eating choices at fast food |
22 | | restaurants, the basics of diabetes management and how good |

1 | | nutrition plays a role in preventing diabetes complications, |
2 | | and encouraging healthy cooking during the holiday seasons; and |
3 | | WHEREAS, In 2018, 61 individuals volunteered 1,879 hours to |
4 | | benefit the Center; trained Center volunteer counselors |
5 | | provide one-on-one assistance to Medicare beneficiaries and |
6 | | their caregivers; volunteers also collect donations for the |
7 | | Center's Holiday Luncheon, run the Center's very popular weekly |
8 | | Bingo activity, operate a meals-on-wheels program, hold |
9 | | informational sessions on important social service topics to |
10 | | keep Seniors educated, and generally provide extra support for |
11 | | the Center as needed; and
|
12 | | WHEREAS, Volunteers are also encouraged to create their own |
13 | | activities for the seniors; activities that volunteers have |
14 | | developed include knitting and crocheting classes, game days in |
15 | | the Center's recreation room, and craft related projects; and |
16 | | WHEREAS, The Governor's Hometown Awards program gives |
17 | | formal recognition to those who contributed to their |
18 | | community's quality of life through projects that had strong |
19 | | volunteer support, met a need, and made a definitive impact; |
20 | | and
|
21 | | WHEREAS, The Glendale Heights Mayor's Center for Senior |
22 | | Citizens Volunteer Initiative Program was 2019's Governor's |

1 | | Hometown Award winner in its Seniors Category; therefore, be it

2 | | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE |
3 | | HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that |
4 | | we congratulate the Glendale Heights Mayor's Center for Senior |
5 | | Citizens Volunteer Initiative Program on being selected as a |
6 | | 2019 Governor's Hometown Award project winner; and be it |
7 | | further

8 | | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this Resolution be |
9 | | delivered to the Glendale Heights Mayor's Center for Senior |
10 | | Citizens Volunteer Initiative Program as a symbol of our |
11 | | respect and esteem.
