2 | | WHEREAS, Native plants, unlike non-native species, are |
3 | | vitally important to Illinois
because they are adapted to the |
4 | | conditions of the local environment and are the
foundation of |
5 | | the region's biodiversity; plant species native to woodlands, |
6 | | prairies, and
wetlands serve as a critical resource for birds, |
7 | | as they provide essential food and
shelter and help mitigate |
8 | | the challenging effects of the changing climate; many species
|
9 | | of insects have co-evolved with native plants over time and are |
10 | | essential food sources
for birds; and
|
11 | | WHEREAS, Each community in Illinois can provide healthy |
12 | | spaces for birds by
expanding or maintaining native plant |
13 | | habitats; such spaces will also benefit the citizens
of |
14 | | Illinois; by simply choosing native plants for a personal |
15 | | garden, yard, or public space,
the use of fertilizer and |
16 | | pesticides can be minimized, significant amounts of water can
|
17 | | be conserved, and energy demands can be reduced, thus creating |
18 | | heathy
communities and saving costs for households, towns, and |
19 | | cities; and
|
20 | | WHEREAS, Native plants play a critical role in supporting |
21 | | birds and the environment; therefore, be it
|
22 | | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE |
