2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of | ||||||
3 | Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Allison | ||||||
4 | Cate Hartman of Chicago, who passed away on November 13, 2019; | ||||||
5 | and
| ||||||
6 | WHEREAS, Allison Hartman was born to James Lea and Frances | ||||||
7 | Cohn Cate in 1931; she attended the University of Chicago | ||||||
8 | Laboratory Schools and graduated from the University of Chicago | ||||||
9 | in 1951; and
| ||||||
10 | WHEREAS, Allison Hartman had an immense interest in | ||||||
11 | automotive mechanics and sports car racing; she built a Formula | ||||||
12 | Junior-class race car with her first husband, George Clowes; | ||||||
13 | her immersion into the racing community was ironic, considering | ||||||
14 | her aversion to driving and that she did not have a license for | ||||||
15 | the last 60 years of her life; and
| ||||||
16 | WHEREAS, In 1964, Allison Hartman and her second husband, | ||||||
17 | James Hartman, opened Hyde Park Auto Service, which she ran | ||||||
18 | until 1996, one of the first women in Chicago to operate an | ||||||
19 | automobile repair shop; she and James competed on the Sports | ||||||
20 | Car Club of America circuit; and | ||||||
21 | WHEREAS, In the 1970s and 1980s, Alison Hartman shifted to |

1 | motorcycle racing and participated in dirt-track competitions | ||||||
2 | around the country with her partner John Millington, who | ||||||
3 | survives her; and | ||||||
4 | WHEREAS, Allison Hartman was a strong advocate for | ||||||
5 | self-defense, earning a Hakkoryu Jujutsu black belt in 1988; | ||||||
6 | she co-founded a self-defense training program, Power for | ||||||
7 | Women; she was an accomplished bench rest target rifle-shooter | ||||||
8 | and won competitions well into her 80s; and | ||||||
9 | WHEREAS, After closing Hyde Park Auto Service, Allison | ||||||
10 | Hartman earned a criminal justice degree from Chicago State | ||||||
11 | University and two post-graduate degrees from John Marshall Law | ||||||
12 | School; she was reportedly one of the oldest people in Illinois | ||||||
13 | history to pass the bar in 2006 at age 75, after which she | ||||||
14 | practiced elder and real estate law; she also rehabilitated and | ||||||
15 | restored several South Side buildings with her son, James; and | ||||||
16 | WHEREAS, Allison Hartman was president of the board for | ||||||
17 | Disabled Adult Residential Enterprises; she was a founding | ||||||
18 | member of Chicago Hyde Park Village, an organization that helps | ||||||
19 | its members to remain in their homes and engaged in the | ||||||
20 | community as they grow older; she was president of the Older | ||||||
21 | Women's League and a founder of the Coalition for Equitable | ||||||
22 | Community Development; she was a long-term board member of the | ||||||
23 | Hyde Park-Kenwood Community Conference; and

1 | WHEREAS, Allison Hartman was preceded in death by her son, | ||||||
2 | James Russel Clowes; and
| ||||||
3 | WHEREAS, Allison Hartman is also survived by her son, | ||||||
4 | Daniel Clowes; her daughter-in-law, Erika Clowes; her | ||||||
5 | grandson, Charles Clowes; her brother, James L. Cate Jr.; and | ||||||
6 | her students and "adopted" children, Julie Orlinsky-Morgan and | ||||||
7 | Jesse Sensibar; therefore, be it
| ||||||
8 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE | ||||||
9 | HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that | ||||||
10 | we mourn the passing of Allison Cate Hartman and extend our | ||||||
11 | sincere condolences to her family, friends, and all who knew | ||||||
12 | and loved her; and be it further
| ||||||
13 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
14 | presented to the family of Allison Hartman as an expression of | ||||||
15 | our deepest sympathy.
