2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of |
3 | | Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Cherie |
4 | | Geraldine Patterson, who passed away on September 16, 2019; and
|
5 | | WHEREAS, Cherie Patterson was born to Owen J. Sr. and Ruth |
6 | | H. Patterson on February 26, 1928; she attended Chicago Public |
7 | | Schools and loved clothes and sports and was a social |
8 | | butterfly; she was the prom queen of Englewood High School, |
9 | | where she graduated with honors at the age of 16 and enrolled |
10 | | in college the same year; she married James D. Steele and they |
11 | | settled in the Chatham neighborhood; and
|
12 | | WHEREAS, Cherie Patterson earned a bachelor's degree from |
13 | | Northeastern Illinois University, followed by both a master's |
14 | | degree and a PhD in Public Administration; she was a life-long |
15 | | learner and passed her love of learning to her children and |
16 | | grandchildren; and |
17 | | WHEREAS, Cherie Patterson coached Little League Baseball, |
18 | | chaperoned field trips, drove her children and their friends to |
19 | | countless dance and swimming lessons, and attended PTA |
20 | | meetings; she loved to bowl and passed her love of the game to |
21 | | her children, enrolling them in bowling leagues at a young age; |
22 | | she organized her community around issues, sparking her |

1 | | interest in politics; and |
2 | | WHEREAS, Cherie Patterson joined Trinity United Church of |
3 | | Christ in January 1987; she was as committed to her church as |
4 | | she was committed to education and her family; she was ordained |
5 | | as a deacon in December 2002; and
|
6 | | WHEREAS, After the passing of her first husband, Cherie |
7 | | Patterson married Otis Mitchell, and, for 21 years, they |
8 | | traveled domestically and internationally, golfed, and became |
9 | | snow birds in Florida; and
|
10 | | WHEREAS, Cherie Patterson was preceded in death by her |
11 | | first husband, James; her second husband, Otis; her parents; |
12 | | and her siblings, Phyllis Patterson, Ruth Wheatley, Elizabeth |
13 | | Taylor, Norma Sampson, Owen Patterson Jr., and Patricia |
14 | | Patterson; and
|
15 | | WHEREAS, Cherie Patterson is survived by her children, John |
16 | | O. (Deborah) Steele Sr. and Diane C. Steele German; eight |
17 | | grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one great-great |
18 | | grandchild; her siblings, George (Marie) Wheatley Sr., Erma |
19 | | Godfrey, and Choma (Marvalene) Patterson; and a host of |
20 | | extended family and friends; therefore, be it

1 | | HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that |
2 | | we mourn the passing of Cherie Geraldine Patterson and extend |
3 | | our sincere condolences to her family, friends, and all who |
4 | | knew and loved her; and be it further
|
5 | | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be |
6 | | presented to the family of Cherie Patterson as an expression of |
7 | | our deepest sympathy.
