2 | | WHEREAS, Under the leadership of A. Philip Randolph, the |
3 | | Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters (BSCP) was the first Black |
4 | | union in America to win a collective bargaining agreement with |
5 | | a major U.S. corporation and to be chartered under the American |
6 | | Federation of Labor; and
|
7 | | WHEREAS, In 1941, A. Philip Randolph successfully |
8 | | organized a call for mass protests to fight discrimination |
9 | | against blacks in wartime jobs; that protest was called off |
10 | | after President Franklin Roosevelt issued an Executive Order |
11 | | banning all discriminatory practices; another threatened |
12 | | protest caused President Harry Truman to issue an Executive |
13 | | Order abolishing the practice of segregation in the U.S. Armed |
14 | | Forces; and
|
15 | | WHEREAS, The ensuing successes led A. Philip Randolph to |
16 | | organize the 1963 March on Washington, D.C., where Dr. Martin |
17 | | Luther King Jr. delivered his "I Have a Dream" speech; and
|
18 | | WHEREAS, The A. Philip Randolph Pullman Porter Museum was |
19 | | founded in 1995 by Dr. Lyn Hughes; the museum is a self-funded |
20 | | African American labor history museum located in the Historic |
21 | | Pullman District and is the only cultural institution in the |
22 | | nation that showcases the history of the African American labor |

1 | | union movement, the BSCP, and A. Philip Randolph; and
|
2 | | WHEREAS, The A. Philip Randolph Pullman Porter Museum |
3 | | proudly celebrates and honors its namesake's lifelong |
4 | | leadership in securing employment for all Americans, as well as |
5 | | his momentous work to end discrimination and secure employment |
6 | | opportunities for African Americans in organized labor; and
|
7 | | WHEREAS, The accomplishments of the BSCP and its founder, |
8 | | A. Philip Randolph, opened the doors to organized labor for |
9 | | African Americans and created a vehicle through which many |
10 | | Civil Rights activities were begun; therefore, be it
|
11 | | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE |
12 | | HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that |
13 | | we commemorate the 94th anniversary of the Brotherhood of |
14 | | Sleeping Car Porters (BSCP) and commend the accomplishments of |
15 | | the A. Philip Randolph Pullman Porter Museum; we wish the |
16 | | museum continued success in preserving and protecting the |
17 | | history of A. Philip Randolph, the Pullman Porters, the African |
18 | | American Labor Movement, and the Pullman District; and be it |
19 | | further

20 | | RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be |
21 | | presented to David A. Peterson, President of the A. Philip |
22 | | Randolph Pullman Porter Museum, and to Dr. Lyn Hughes, Founder |
