HOUSE RESOLUTION

  
 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of 
3Representatives wish to raise awareness surrounding lung 
4cancer; and
  
 
5    WHEREAS, Lung cancer is uncontrolled multiplication and 
6growth of the lung cells resulting in malignant tumor 
7formation; and
  
 
8    WHEREAS, The condition is characterized by an intense 
9cough, the appearance of blood after coughing, and shortness of 
10breath; and
  
 
11    WHEREAS, Treatment involves surgery, chemotherapy, and 
12radiation therapy; and
  
 
13    WHEREAS, There are two main types of lung cancer, small 
14cell lung cancer and the more prevalent non-small cell lung 
15cancer, which constitute approximately 80 percent of lung 
16cancers; and
  
 
17    WHEREAS, Lung cancer is the world's leading cause of cancer 
18deaths; and
  
 
19    WHEREAS, More people die due to lung cancer than due to

1prostate, breast, and pancreatic cancers combined; and
  
 
2    WHEREAS, Lung cancer claims the lives of more women in the 
3U.S. than breast, ovarian, and cervical cancer combined; and
  
 
4    WHEREAS, Although lung cancer is the number one cancer 
5killer in the world, lung cancer is the most underfunded 
6cancer; and
  
 
7    WHEREAS, Increased awareness of lung cancer will lead to 
8increased knowledge and support for both lung cancer research 
9and the families affected by the disease; therefore, be it
  
 
10    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE 
11HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that 
12we declare November 2019 as Lung Cancer Awareness Month in the 
13State of Illinois and encourage continued research on lung 
14cancer and community support for those affected by the disease.
