2 | WHEREAS, The Congressional Medal of Honor Foundation is the | ||||||
3 | public operating arm of the
Congressional Medal of Honor | ||||||
4 | Society, the fellowship of American warriors that is | ||||||
5 | exclusively
limited to living recipients of the Medal of Honor; | ||||||
6 | and
| ||||||
7 | WHEREAS, Since its creation by Congress and the United | ||||||
8 | States War Department under President
Abraham Lincoln in 1861, | ||||||
9 | the Medal of Honor, often called the Congressional Medal of | ||||||
10 | Honor, is
the highest-ranking decoration that can be bestowed | ||||||
11 | upon an American warrior for valor on duty in
active service, | ||||||
12 | including valor in combat; and
| ||||||
13 | WHEREAS, The Congressional Medal of Honor Foundation, in | ||||||
14 | its public operating outreach,
educates and inspires Americans | ||||||
15 | about the values embodied in the Medal of Honor: courage and | ||||||
16 | sacrifice, commitment and integrity, citizenship and | ||||||
17 | patriotism; and
| ||||||
18 | WHEREAS, These values are essential and
increasingly | ||||||
19 | needed in the character development of our current and future | ||||||
20 | generations of Illinois
citizens; and | ||||||
21 | WHEREAS, As of May 20, 2019, there were only 70 living |

1 | recipients of the Medal of Honor; and | ||||||
2 | WHEREAS, To keep alive and expand the public understanding | ||||||
3 | and celebration of the Medal of
Honor and to pay respect to the | ||||||
4 | character traits which it represents, the Congressional
Medal | ||||||
5 | of Honor Foundation will host the Salute to the Medal of Honor | ||||||
6 | and Distinguished Citizens
Award events in Chicago on June 6 | ||||||
7 | through June 8, 2019; and | ||||||
8 | WHEREAS, During these events, the Distinguished Citizens | ||||||
9 | Award will be presented to exceptional
Americans who exemplify | ||||||
10 | leadership and service and inspire others by selflessly giving | ||||||
11 | of time and
talent to the community and the nation; and
| ||||||
12 | WHEREAS, The Crown Family descended from Henry Crown | ||||||
13 | (1896-1990) and his son Lester Crown (born
1925) of Chicago; | ||||||
14 | the Crown Family will be honored in June 2019 by the | ||||||
15 | Foundation's
Distinguished Citizens Award; and
| ||||||
16 | WHEREAS, The bestowing of the Distinguished Citizens Award | ||||||
17 | on the Crown Family and the events of the Salute to the Medal | ||||||
18 | of Honor celebration will mark the 20th Anniversary of the | ||||||
19 | Congressional Medal
of Honor Foundation and its operations of | ||||||
20 | public outreach and character education; therefore, be it
| ||||||
21 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE |

1 | HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that | ||||||
2 | we join the Congressional Medal of Honor Foundation
in honoring | ||||||
3 | the Crown Family and their long and distinguished history in | ||||||
4 | the Chicago area and around
the world and their long tradition | ||||||
5 | of service to their communities; and be it further | ||||||
6 | RESOLVED, That we welcome the Salute to the Medal of Honor | ||||||
7 | and the Distinguished Citizens
Award, hosted by the | ||||||
8 | Congressional Medal of Honor Foundation, to Illinois and wish | ||||||
9 | the
Foundation, its guests, and its honorees a distinguished | ||||||
10 | experience in the Chicago area; and be it further | ||||||
11 | RESOLVED, That we redouble this welcome with respect to | ||||||
12 | those recipients of the Medal of Honor
who are able to take | ||||||
13 | part in these honors and ceremonies in person; and be it | ||||||
14 | further | ||||||
15 | RESOLVED, That for those recipients of the Medal of Honor | ||||||
16 | who are alive but cannot attend these
events, know that you | ||||||
17 | will always be present in the hearts of the people of Illinois; | ||||||
18 | and be it further | ||||||
19 | RESOLVED, That we call upon the people of Illinois to take | ||||||
20 | within ourselves the moral lesson of the
Medal of Honor, as | ||||||
21 | recognized and celebrated by the Congressional Medal of Honor | ||||||
22 | Foundation, as
essential elements in the character development |

1 | of we Americans as a people; and be it further
| ||||||
2 | RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be | ||||||
3 | presented to Louis R. Chênevert, the Chairman of the
| ||||||
4 | Congressional Medal of Honor Foundation, and to John Glotzbach, | ||||||
5 | Treasurer of the Congressional
Medal of Honor Foundation.
