HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The Congressional Medal of Honor Foundation is the
3public operating arm of the Congressional Medal of Honor
4Society, the fellowship of American warriors that is
5exclusively limited to living recipients of the Medal of Honor;
6and
 
7    WHEREAS, Since its creation by Congress and the United
8States War Department under President Abraham Lincoln in 1861,
9the Medal of Honor, often called the Congressional Medal of
10Honor, is the highest-ranking decoration that can be bestowed
11upon an American warrior for valor on duty in active service,
12including valor in combat; and
 
13    WHEREAS, The Congressional Medal of Honor Foundation, in
14its public operating outreach, educates and inspires Americans
15about the values embodied in the Medal of Honor: courage and
16sacrifice, commitment and integrity, citizenship and
17patriotism; and
 
18    WHEREAS, These values are essential and increasingly
19needed in the character development of our current and future
20generations of Illinois citizens; and
 
21    WHEREAS, As of May 20, 2019, there were only 70 living

1recipients of the Medal of Honor; and
 
2    WHEREAS, To keep alive and expand the public understanding
3and celebration of the Medal of Honor and to pay respect to the
4character traits which it represents, the Congressional Medal
5of Honor Foundation will host the Salute to the Medal of Honor
6and Distinguished Citizens Award events in Chicago on June 6
7through June 8, 2019; and
 
8    WHEREAS, During these events, the Distinguished Citizens
9Award will be presented to exceptional Americans who exemplify
10leadership and service and inspire others by selflessly giving
11of time and talent to the community and the nation; and
 
12    WHEREAS, The Crown Family descended from Henry Crown
13(1896-1990) and his son Lester Crown (born 1925) of Chicago;
14the Crown Family will be honored in June 2019 by the
15Foundation's Distinguished Citizens Award; and
 
16    WHEREAS, The bestowing of the Distinguished Citizens Award
17on the Crown Family and the events of the Salute to the Medal
18of Honor celebration will mark the 20th Anniversary of the
19Congressional Medal of Honor Foundation and its operations of
20public outreach and character education; therefore, be it
 
21    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE

1HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
2we join the Congressional Medal of Honor Foundation in honoring
3the Crown Family and their long and distinguished history in
4the Chicago area and around the world and their long tradition
5of service to their communities; and be it further
 
6    RESOLVED, That we welcome the Salute to the Medal of Honor
7and the Distinguished Citizens Award, hosted by the
8Congressional Medal of Honor Foundation, to Illinois and wish
9the Foundation, its guests, and its honorees a distinguished
10experience in the Chicago area; and be it further
 
11    RESOLVED, That we redouble this welcome with respect to
12those recipients of the Medal of Honor who are able to take
13part in these honors and ceremonies in person; and be it
14further
 
15    RESOLVED, That for those recipients of the Medal of Honor
16who are alive but cannot attend these events, know that you
17will always be present in the hearts of the people of Illinois;
18and be it further
 
19    RESOLVED, That we call upon the people of Illinois to take
20within ourselves the moral lesson of the Medal of Honor, as
21recognized and celebrated by the Congressional Medal of Honor
22Foundation, as essential elements in the character development

1of we Americans as a people; and be it further
 
2    RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be
3presented to Louis R. Chênevert, the Chairman of the
4Congressional Medal of Honor Foundation, and to John Glotzbach,
5Treasurer of the Congressional Medal of Honor Foundation.
