2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of |
3 | | Representatives are pleased to congratulate Douglas J. Banes on |
4 | | his
retirement after more than 50 years of dedicated service to |
5 | | the working men and women of Illinois; and
|
6 | | WHEREAS, Doug Banes has been a member of the United |
7 | | Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America
since 1960, |
8 | | originally joining Millwright Local 2158 in the Quad Cities; |
9 | | and
|
10 | | WHEREAS, Throughout his career, Doug Banes showed his |
11 | | dedication to his union and the rights of working
men and |
12 | | women, serving as the union's business representative and |
13 | | business manager before moving to
positions at the Council, |
14 | | including the first Executive Secretary-Treasurer for the |
15 | | Northern Illinois and
Eastern Iowa District Council of |
16 | | Carpenters; he became a member of the General Executive Board |
17 | | in
1991, representing the Third District; he was elected |
18 | | General Vice President of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters |
19 | | and Joiners of America in 1995; and
|
20 | | WHEREAS, During his time in office, Doug Banes was driven |
21 | | by his experience as an apprenticeship instructor
to develop |
22 | | industry-driven training for the union's millwright members; |
|

1 | | he was instrumental in
creating innovative training offered at |
2 | | the International Training Center, a site that he regularly |
3 | | visits to
remind trainees that a positive attitude and |
4 | | professionalism are as important on the job as technical

5 | | skills; and |
6 | | WHEREAS, Doug Banes was also a founder of the Illowa |
7 | | Labor/Management Committee, a pioneering initiative
to improve |
8 | | labor-management cooperation and promote the interests of |
9 | | union members and
contractors; and |
10 | | WHEREAS, While serving on the Carpenters' General |
11 | | Executive Board, Doug Banes led an effort to empower
workers by |
12 | | creating the Millwright Labor-Management Committee and the UBC |
13 | | Pile Driving Committee; and |
14 | | WHEREAS, Doug Banes has had the steadfast support of his |
15 | | wife, Jan Johnson Banes, with whom he has
enjoyed over 50 years |
16 | | of marriage and shares the blessing of three children, Shelli, |
17 | | Todd, and
Margo, five grandchildren, and two |
18 | | great-grandchildren; and
|
19 | | WHEREAS, Throughout the years, Doug Banes and Jan have |
20 | | maintained close ties to their community, actively
|
21 | | participating in organizations including the Wild Turkey |
22 | | Federation, Ducks Unlimited, and the Illinois
Tree Farmer |

1 | | Association; their commitment to conservation has led them to |
2 | | place their own
property in a conservation easement to preserve |
3 | | it from future development; and
|
4 | | WHEREAS, For over 50 years, Doug Banes's dedication and |
5 | | passions have enriched the lives of his coworkers
and |
6 | | neighbors; therefore, be it
|
7 | | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE |
8 | | HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that |
9 | | we thank Douglas J. Banes for his enduring commitment to |
10 | | organized labor and Illinois' middle class and wish him a |
11 | | joy-filled retirement; and be it further
|
12 | | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be |
13 | | presented to Douglas Banes as a symbol of our
respect and |
14 | | esteem.
